結婚しました！　I just got married!

久々のブログの更新となりましたが（汗）、2012年はおめでたいニュースから！と思い、自分でネタを作ってみた。

1月23日（月）に婚姻届を提出し、無事デレクと夫婦になりました。

提出したのは秋田市役所新屋支所！ここで私の叔父が働いているので、どうせ出すなら親戚のいるところで！と思い2人で勝手ながら押しかけた　=3=3=3

叔父さん立会いの元、デレクがアメリカ大使館からもらってきた婚姻要件具備証明書とその日本語訳を合わせて婚姻届を提出。

ところで、デレクは自分のはんこを持っている。それもいっちょまえに印鑑登録されているやつだ。今回もいつ必要になってもいいようにしっかり持ってきてたのだけど、「外国人の方はハンコは不要です。」との言葉にガックリ…。よほど悲しい顔をしていたのだろう、見かねた係員の方が押してもいいよ、と言ってくれた！おかげさまで署名の隣に無事「デレク」のハンコが押された。

やはりすぐには受理されず、後から電話がかかってきて受理されたとの報告を受けた。

1月23日は特に記念日とか思い出の日ではなかったけど、これからは正月休み明けのブルーな気持ちを癒してくれる記念日になりそう♪

I haven’t written a new blog post for a long time, but I thought I should start with a happy topic for 2012, so I made one by myself.

Derek and I submitted a marriage paper and be a married couple on January twenty-third.

The place we submitted the paper was the Akita City Hall, Araya Blunch. My uncle works there and we decided to go there because of him.

In the presence of my uncle, we submitted the marriage notification with the certificate of legal capacity to contract marriage and its Japanese translation that Derek got at the embassy.

By the way, Derek has his own seal registered. He brought it to the city hall office so that he could use it just in case. But the woman processing our paper said that foreigners didn’t have to sign with a seal on the paper… He was a little disappointed, but she finally let him have a chance to use his own seal! Thanks to her, he was able to stamp his seal next to his signature.

Our marriage certificate wasn’t granted right away, but I got a phone call a little later from them telling me it was granted with no trouble.

January 23rd had no special meaning to us, but it will be a wonderful anniversary healing us from depression after the New Year’s holidays.

謎解きの答え　The Answers for the Detective Stories

でした！

◎謎解きその１◎について
　車内で地震を体験したのはこの時が初めて。たいてい運転中に地震が起きても気づかないことが多いけど、地震が強かったのと停車中に起きたということでかなりびっくりした！！そんなあたふたしている私をよそにデレクは、もう慣れっこといった顔で「じしんだよ～」などと言っている。慣れててもあんなに揺れたら超こわい！

◎謎解きその２◎
　スーパーの肉売り場で豚肉を吟味している最中に突然強い揺れが襲ってきた。棚のものがポトポト落ちてきて、何かにつかまってないとちょっと怖いくらいの揺れだった。店員さんの呼びかけでみんな屋外に避難したけど、けが人もなく無事でよかった。

今は地震の数も少なくなってきたけど、いざというときのためにしっかり備えておきたい。

The answers are both “earthquake.”

About Story 1:
It was my first time to experience an earthquake in a car. Usually you don’t notice it even if an earthquake occurs when you are driving. But this time the earthquake was quite strong, and I was in a parked car. So that made me really scared!! While I was shaking, Derek pretended to be one of Sendai Sider who are used to having earthquakes saying “Yeah, it’s an earthquake.” Even though you are used to it, it’s very scary when it comes suddenly!

About Story2:
The second earthquake occered suddenly when we chose the pork meat at the grocery store. Things on the shelves started falling down one after another, and we needed to hold onto something during the shaking. The shop staff told all of their customers to go outside just incase. They were glad there was no one who got injured.

Now we have less earthquakes, but we should still need be ready just in case.

◎謎解きその１◎　

8月16日 -------- モールへ行く途中ガソスタに寄った。店員さんが「窓、お拭きしましょうか？」と言ってきて、そんなに汚れていなかったので「結構です。」と答えると、その直後に車が揺れだした。

「あれ？拭かなくてもいいっていったのに拭いてくれてる～。」

すると揺れがどんどん激しくなり、「一体何人がかりで拭いているわけっ！？」と思わず後ろを振り返った。

誰もいなかった。

◎謎解きその2◎

8月19日 --------- デレクがコーヒーをいれてくれた。少し飲んだところで、夕飯の買い物に行かなきゃいけないことを思い出し、飲みかけをキッチンに置いて、デレクと一緒に近くのスーパーに出かけた。

買い物から帰ってきたら、コーヒーの中身がキッチンに大量にこぼれていた…。

なぜでしょう？

- Story 1-

August 16th --------- Derek and I stopped by at a gas station on the way to the mall. A attendant asked us, “Shall I wipe the window?” But the windows looked kind of clean, so I said “No, thank you.”

Just after that, our car started to shake. I was thinking “I told him not to wipe the windows, but he’s still doing it.”

Then the car started shaking harder and harder, thought “How many people are trying to do it!?” and looked back.

There was no one doing like that.

- Story 2-

August 19th ---------- Derek made me some coffee. As I had a sip, I realized that I needed to go shopping for dinner. So I left my cup in the kitchen and left for the grocery store with Derek.

When we got home, coffee was spilled around the kitchen.

Do you know why!?

8月10日 -------- ハッピーバースデー、自分！この日は私の誕生日パーティーと称してハル、メグ、クミ、ナオミの4人で女子会を開いた。今年のプレゼントは、みんなから「ナオミらしくない！」と言われながらも強引にリクエストしたこのシャネルの美白クリーム！お肌のことを考えなきゃならない年になってきたからねっ。みんな、ありがとう♥

でもさすがは女子会、他の友達とはしないセキララなトークがくりひろげられたわ（＾＾）

August 10th ---------- Happy Birthday to me! My friends Haru, Meg, Kumi and I had a fancy dinner together at a fancy restaurant for my birthday. The present from them was a lightning cream from CHANEL, which I requested even though they told me that it wasn’t like me to chose it. It’s about the time for me to think about my skin seriously. Thank you guys!

And, that’s the girls talk, we enjoyed talking and listening to naked stories!!

発見！秋田の新みやげ　We Found It! Akita’s New Souvenir

8月6日 --------- 今年の竿燈は震災後ということもあって、「がんばろう東北」と書かれたものが多く見られた。

お察しの通り、いつもの仲間で竿燈を見に行くのは毎年恒例となっているが、その中でも今回はちょっとおもしろいものを発見した。

秋田のTシャツ！！！

秋田名物がロゴになってプリントされ、おしゃれな仕上がりとなっている。
これを見た瞬間、「あー！パクられた！！！」とうちら全員が叫んだ！実はうちらもロゴ入りTシャツを作ったことがあるからだ（過去のポスト参照）！！！しかもこちらの方が完成度が高いだけに、みんなライバル心むき出し！（笑）

ちなみにこのTシャツ、竿燈まつり限定の商品だそうで他では手に入らないという幻に近い商品。まどかちゃんはまっきーへのおみやげとして１つ買ったけど、うちらは「自分で作れるし！！」ということで買わなかった。

うちらバージョンのTシャツは、その年うちらの間で流行った「流行語」がロゴになり、毎年増えていくというシステム（のはず…）。みんな今年のロゴを考えながら、そして次このTシャツを見つけたら買おうと考えながら竿燈会場を後にした。

August 6th --------- Because of the big earthquake that happened last March, I was able to see many kanto lanterns with the words “Ganbare Tohoku!” or “Never give up, Tohoku!”

As you already know, the kanto festival is an annual summer event for us in Akita to go and see. But this year we found an interesting Akitan souvenir.

The Akita T-shirt!!!

The logos of famous Akitan items were displayed on the back and it looked really fancy. When we saw this T-shirt, we shouted “They copied us!!!” That was because we’ve also made our own original T-shirts with a logo before. – see the past post - And we all knew that this one turned out better, so we didn’t hasitate hiding our rivalry against them!

Just for the record, this T-shirt is limited merchandise at the kanto festival. It’s almost like a shadow souvenir from Akita. Madoka bought one for her boyfriend Makky, but the others didn’t because of our pride as T-shirts makers. “We can make a better one!”

About the system of our T-shirts, we use the words going around inside our group of friends throughout the year as the logo and put it on the T-shirts. So we get a new logo, one by one, every year, as I recall. We all left the festival thinking of the logo for this year and of buying that Akita T-shirts next time we find them.

広栄堂　Koei-do

8月6日------------　いつもの仲間と竿燈を見に行く前に『光栄堂』でかき氷を食べることにした。この『光栄堂』のかき氷は秋田市で知らない人はいないくらい超有名！！私が高校生の時には、クラスの女子全員で学校帰りに押しかけたほど、昔からみんなに愛されている♥

でかっ！この氷がヒトカケラたりとも器から落っこちないよう慎重に穴を掘っていくのがポイント。中にはおいしい果汁＆果肉がたっぷり入っている♪ 私のお気に入りは『生グレープフルーツソフト』。高校時代から、もうこれしか食べたことがないっていうくらい一筋に味わい続けているのだ♪

このとーってもおいしい『生グレープフルーツソフト』、実は秋田人は親しみをこめて『生グソ』と略して呼んでいる。しかし、注文するときはさすがに気を使って「生グレープフルーツソフトを３つ…」とフルネームで言うと、お店のおじさんが自ら「生グソですね～！」と…（*0*）なんだ、公認なのか！

それにしてもこの日は土曜日ということもあり、その『生グソ』にたどり着くまでなんと待つこと1時間半！！やはり行くなら平日だね☆

August 6th ---------- My usual friends and I decided to go to eat shaved ice at the place called Koei-do. It is very famous for its delicious shaved ice. Almost everyone living in Akita City knows it.

When I was a high school student, all the girls in my class rushed into there on the way back home from school! It has been loved by everyone for a long time.

Look at how big it is! You have to eat it without any ice falling down on the table, and that’s the accepted way to eat it. There are some fresh juice and fruits underneath the ice. My favorite flavor is the “fresh grapefruit with ice cream.” I love that flavor so much that I haven’t ordered any other flavors since I was in high school!

Interestingly, we all jokingly call the “fresh grapefruit with ice cream,” or nama grapefruit soft in Japanese, "namaguso” for short, which means something like saying the word “crap!” in English. It’s easy to say, but when I ordered it, I couldn’t say so. Instead, I ordered using the full name, but…then the clerk said “OK, Three craps!” Oh, no…that’s been officially approved…!

Anyway, since this place is really popular, and it was a Saturday, we waited one and half hours until we could eat crap!!! I recommend going there on a weekday!

修学旅行in 北海道！ School Trip to Hokkaido!

修学旅行で北海道へ！私が個人的に楽しんだ部分をピックアップしてみた。
I went to Hokkaido for school trip! I picked up some parts that I enjoyed myself on this trip.

《１日目》青森港からフェリーで函館へ。ソーセージで有名なカール・レイモンのお店でハーブレモンソーセージをペロリ。ん～、おいしい！夜は函館山で世界三大夜景と言われるほどの美しい夜景を堪能！
(Day 1) Headed off to Hakodate from Aomori Port by ferry. We ate a herb and lemon flavored sausage at a shop called Carl Raymon, which is famous for good sausages. Yum!! At night, we went up to Mt. Hakodate and saw the beautiful night view. It is counted the three best night view in the world!

《２日目》夜は札幌ドームでナイター観戦。バックスクリーンに我々修学旅行隊がアップで映し出されたのには大感激！
(Day 2) We watched a professional baseball game at the Sapporo Dome. We were so excited when we saw ourselves on the big screen!

《３日目》小樽駅の横っちょ、三角市場にある『丸味屋』で毛ガニ、ホタテ、イクラを大人買い！いろいろおまけもしてくれて、とってもお得な気分に♥北海道から海の幸を宅急便で送るという大人っぽいことを一度してみたかったので、今回その夢が叶った。
その後、同じく三角市場の『北のどんぶり屋滝波食堂』でエビ・イクラ・サーモン丼を堪能。最近エビにはまっている私としては、最高の組み合わせ！食べてる間中、ず～～っと幸せだった♥
昼食後、札幌に戻り『雪印パーラー』でスィーツタイム。去年の北海道旅行で食べたのと同じパフェを再び注文。やっぱりおいしい！
(Day3) I bought a hairy crab, scallops and a bottle of salmon roe at a shop called Marumiya in Sankaku Market, next to Otaru Station. The shop owner gave me a small discount, so I felt like I gained something! I’d always wanted to send a parcel full of seafood, that I bought in Hokkaido to my home. My dream came true! After that I went to have lunch at a place called Kita no Donburiya Takinami Shokudo in the same market. I ate a bowl of shrimps, salmon and salmon roe. I’d been keen on shrimps, so this combination was excellent for me! I was so happy the whole time I was eating! After lunch, I went back to Sapporo and had the same parfait that I ate on last year’s trip to Hokkaido. It was still delicious!

何度か行ったことのある場所だったけど、新たな発見ができてうれしかった。
Hokkaido was a place I had been to few times before, but was glad that I had found something new.

フ・レ・ン・ズ in イルマ F.R.I.E.N.D.S in IRUMA

7月30日　---------　デレクも仙台に引っ越し、いよいよ我々の会合も日本人だけとなった。

マークやモーリーンがいなくなってから、みんなの英語に対する免疫が劇的に低下しつつある。なんと自分の学校のALTに話しかけられないほど英語に対して恐怖心をもっちゃってるらしい！

第二のマーク・モーリーンを探してるけど、あのキャラはなかなかいないだろうなぁ～。

July 30th ------------ After Derek moved to Sendai, we’ve eventually ended up with only us Japanese people getting together for a drink.

Since Mark and Maureen left Akita, the other members’ immunity to English is drastically getting less and less. They even seemed to have a fear of speaking English as much as they couldn’t talk to the ALTs at their school!

We are looking for someone similar to Mark’s and Maureen’s character, but I’m sure it will take forever!

仙台へ引っ越し　Moving to Sendai

7月10日（日）-------　いよいよデレクの引っ越しの日がやってきた。デレクは一足先に昨日仙台に到着しているが、まだ山のように残っている荷物を私と母の車に詰め込んで2台連なって仙台へ出発した！

秋田から仙台まで高速で3時間20分。デレクの就職が決まってからの1カ月間、毎週のようにここを往復した。アパート探しは、津波などで家を失った人たちが多くいるため簡単には見つからなかった。見つかってもデレクには『外国人』という壁があり、それが障害となって一度決まったものがキャンセルになったりと、ちょっとつらい思いもした。そんな経験を経た後だったので、アパートが決まった時は喜びと安堵の気持ちでいっぱいだった☆

仙台の道路はボコボコして走りづらく、半分倒壊したままの建物がときどき見られた。しかしながら仙台の街自体は普通に機能し、仙台の人たちも元気そうに見えた。この新しい街でデレクがどんな生活を始めるのか楽しみ！

そして私たちの遠距離生活も始まった。

Sunday, July 10th -------- Finally the moving day had come. Derek already arrived in Sendai on the day before, so my mom and I put the rest of his belongings into the trunk and left for Sendai. We drove together in separate cars!

It takes about three hours and twenty minutes from Akita to Sendai by car using the express way. Derek and I made a round trip on it almost every week over the past month after he got the job in Sendai. Apartment hunting didn’t go smoothly because there were many people who lost their house by tsunami, and those people tried to find places to live. Even though he once found a place, it was canceled because of he is a foreigner. That made us a little upset. So after all those experiences, we were very relieved when we finally got a place!

In Sendai, you can still see the bumpy road or half collapsed building remaining. But the city itself works like normal, and the people there looked good. I look forward to learning how Derek is settling into this new city!

And now our long distance relationship has started.

八森『いしづか』　Ishizuka: Hachimori

6月5日（日）---------　この日は県北方面に向かって海岸線沿いの半日ドライブへ出かけた。海沿いに来たらやっぱり海の幸♥　晩ごはんは八森の『いしづか』に決めた！

行く前に何時まで開いてるか電話でたずねたところ、「だいたい時間言ってもらえればその時間に開けておきます。」とのことだった。道に迷いながらやっとたどり着き、ちょうどお腹もペコペコに！

『いしずか』の名物は「いいかげん丼」。その日に獲れたいろんなものが贅沢にのっている。まずこの上にのっかっているエビ！！「一気にジュルっていったほうがうまいよ！」っていう店主さんのアドバイスどおり、一気にジュルっといった。ゲ・キ・ウ・マ！魚もおいしいし、かなり贅沢な気分を味わうことができた☆
なんだか隠れ家的食事処を見つけた気分！ごちそうさまでした～☆

Sunday, June fifth --------- Derek and I drove along the northern coastline of Akita. When you visit the northern coast, you can’t pass up fresh seafood from the Japan Sea! We decided to have dinner at a restaurant called Ishizuka in Hachimori.

I called to find out the closing time before we got there, and the owner said he would open the restaurant around the time we would get there. After a couple of detours, we finally found the place, and we were already hungry!

One of the specialties of Ishizuka was this called “iikagen-don” or “anything-over-rice-bowl.” It was served lavishly using the abundant seafood. Look at the shrimp on the top!! The owner told us the right way to eat shrimp, and we followed his advice. We just sucked up the shrimp’s insides all at once! It was so delicious! The rest of the fresh seafood was also delicious.

This place made me feel like I found a great holl-in-a-wall!

おいしいもの巡り　in　岩手　Gourmet Tour in Iwate

5月29日（日）―――ハルちゃんとメグちゃんと3人で岩手へ向かった。目的は…もちろん買い物＆おいしい食事♥とくにランチとディナーどちらも三ツ星級のうまさだった！

《ランチ》　雫石にある『極楽乃』で雫石そばを堪能！とってもコシがあっておいしい！わさびは雫石産のものを自分たちですりおろしたよ！

《ディナー》盛岡市内にある『せがわ』で焼き肉を賞味！焼き肉もおいしいけど、ここのつけものとみそ汁も絶品！やみつきになりそう！

おいしいものは女子の元気の源なのだ！岩手に来てよかった～☆

Sunday, May twenty-ninth --------- I went to Iwate Prefecture, which is located next to Akita, with my friends Haru & Meg. The main purpose was…shopping and good food! Our lunch and dinner were both Excellent!

We ate soba at a place called “Gokurakuno” in Shizukuishi Town for lunch. The texture was chewy and very delicious! We grated wasabi from Shizukuishi by ourselves.
And we had yakiniku at a restaurant called “Segawa” in Morioka City for dinner. The beef was really tasty, and the pickled vegetable and miso soup with freshwater clam were also the best! They were so addictive! I could have eaten more!

Good food is our energy source!! We were so happy to come to Iwate!

おいしい料理に楽しい仲間…あ～、幸せ♪♪

Friday, April twenty-ninth--- Since Maureen came back to Akita, the usual gangs got together at a restaurant called “Aoitori-no-restaurant”(The blue bird’s restaurant). At the same time we celebrated the birthday of Kazu & Wakasa who were born in April. Happy Birthday!! Today’s topics were about everyone’s latest news, about our new schools and about the plans for the Golden Week holidays.

Good food and good friends…I was soooooooooooo happy!!!!

カリスマALTが戻ってきた！ The charismatic ALT came back!

さかのぼること4月のトップニュースと言えば…

モーリーンが秋田に戻ってきたことだ！！

去年アメリカへ帰国したモーリーンがこの度、2週間という短い間ではあるけど、秋田へ遊びに来た☆そして他の先生の計らいもあり、なんとうちの学校で1日ALTとして授業をしてもらうことになった！！

一緒にゲームをやって、初対面の子どもたちもすっかりなじんだ様子。しまいには子どもたちから積極的に話しかけに行ったり、｢何か英語で話した～～～～～いっ！！｣という声まで聞こえてきた。みんなとっても楽しかった様子♥

私も久々にモーリーンと授業ができて本当に楽しかった♥♥♥
ありがとう、モーリーン！！

Going back to April, we had a big event in this month…

Maureen came back to AKITA!!!

She was an ALT I　had worked together with in a previous school, and went back to America last year. I was looking forward to going and seeing her this time, but instead she even came to my school and taught English in the English classes together as an one-day- ALT at the discretion of another teacher!!

My students warmed up with her though an English activity. They were quick to talk to her positively (They are usually shy though.), and the students even said, “I want to talk to her in English!!” They seemed to have fun with Maureen.

I really enjoyed teaching with her as well!

あかちゃん　The Baby

赤ちゃんが我が家にやって来てからというもの、家の中がだいぶにぎやかになった=3=3

親戚や妹の友だちなど、大勢の人たちがお祝いに来てくれて、赤ちゃんは常に話題の中心人物☆お祝いもたくさんもらい、なんとアメリカのデレクの両親もお祝いを送ってきてくれた！その心遣いに私も妹夫婦もうちの母も大感激。どうもありがとうございます。

そんな幸せムードの中、一人だけふてくされているのがこの人

サル！（←うちの愛猫の名前です！）

赤ちゃんに話題をもっていかれてふて寝の日々が続いているけど、みんなサルのこと忘れてないから安心してね！

赤ちゃんの名前は「たいち（泰知）」。小さい体で大きな幸せを運んできてくれた♥

Since the baby came back home from the hospital, my family became more cheerful.

Our relatives, my sister’s friends and many other people visited us to celebrate his birth, and he was always the hottest topic. My new little nephew received many gifts from many people. He even got presents from Derek’s parents in America! My sister and her husband, me, mom…everyone was so delighted by their courtesy. Thank you so much!!!

In the meantime, there was only one who was sulking in this happily atmosphere.↓

The baby took all the hottest topic away from him and he was left sulking…
Don’t worry, we’ll never forget you!

The baby’s name is “Taichi （泰知）”. He brought a great joy to us with that tiny body.

いのち Lives

震災があってからというもの、なんとなく気持ちが落ち込む日々が続いてたけど、そんな中明るい話題が我が家に舞い込んできた=3=3=3

4月11日に妹が元気な男の赤ちゃんを出産したのだ！

もともと横浜に住んでいて、この度里帰り出産のため1カ月ほど前に秋田に戻ってきていた。
日付が11日に変わってすぐ、「陣痛っぽいものが10分おきに来てる」ということで妹は母と秋田組合病院へ向かった。午前3時半頃に母から「今分娩室に入った」と連絡が来て、私も急いで病院へ車を走らせた。そして生まれたのが午前3時57分！！すごいスピード出産☆生まれたての赤ちゃんはちっちゃくて、本当にかわいかった。

震災からちょうど1カ月、命の尊さを改めて実感した一日でもあった。

The days in which I’ve felt down a bit had continued since the earthquake occurred, but some happy news was dropped into my family.

My sister had a baby boy on the 11th of April!!

She lives in Yokohama, but she came back home to Akita to give birth.

As soon as the date changed to the 11th, my sister and my mom headed to the hospital after something that felt like labor had started. My mom called me and said that my sister went into a delivery room around 3:30am, and then I fushed to the hospital. The baby was born at 3:57am. So quick!! The new-born-baby was really tiny and cute.

Exactly a month after the earthquake----it had made me realize once more the preciousness of life.

未だ大規模な余震の可能性があるということで、防災グッズを準備した！
中には懐中電灯、ラジオ、水、タオルなどなど…
いつ起こるか分からないけど、とりあえず移動の時はなるべく持っていくようにしている。（用心しすぎ！？でもしすぎて十分なくらいだからね！）

デレクにはもし地震が起きた場合、私の家に向かって逃げてきてもらうことにし、その時のために防災グッズを準備するように言ったのだが…

まだ未完成だけど、一応重要なものは全部入っているらしい。少なくともこれだけは持ってきてほしいけど、その袋、穴とかあいてないでしょうね！！？

There’s a possibility of having a big aftershocks even now, so I prepared a disaster kit.
It has a flash light, a radio, a bottle of water, a towel etc in it. We never know when the aftershock will happen, but I try to bring it when I go out just in case. (Is it too careful!? But you say it is best to be on the safe side!)

I told Derek to escape toward my house when an earthquake occers, and to prepare a disaster kit in the case but…

がんばろう東日本！ Don’t give up, East Japan!

連日地震の特番がひっきりなしに流れている。
1日目、地震直後（2時45分ころ）から秋田は停電。
道路の信号は全て消え、帰り道はなるべく信号のない農道や右折しないルートを選んで帰宅した。デレクのアパートは、電気がないとガスが使えなかったので、交通量が少なくなってからガスコンロと電灯、食料を届けに行った。
2日目、夜の8時前にやっと電気が戻る。パソコンをつけるとすぐに、オーストラリアのホストファミリーからスカイプで連絡が来た。向こうでもトップニュース扱いだそうで、あの津波の映像を見てものすごく心配したらしい。東京の友だちから連絡が入り始め、交通マヒで帰宅するのにみんな３～４時間かかったとのこと。

3日目、安否が心配だった仙台・岩手の友だち全員から無事の報告がそろった。
うち一人は新車を流されたらしいけど、無事で本当に良かった！
昔住んでいた仙台の街の変わり果てた姿がテレビに映し出されるたびに涙が出そうになる。でも泣くことはできない。私たちが頑張らなければならないから。こうしている間にもまた別の地震が起こっている。
一人でも多くの人の命が助かるよう祈るとともに、私たちに今できることを今は頑張る。
The special news programs about the earthquake are broadcast almost daily.
On the first day, we had a blackout in Akita just after the earthquake.
Traffic lights were all out, and I went home choosing a route, like farm roads, with less lights or the chance of right turns. Derek couldn’t use the electricity and gas at his apartment, so I took a gas stove, a flash light and some food after the traffic got less busy.
On the second day, the electricity was back just before 8P.M. I got a Skype call from my host family in Australia as soon as I turned my PC on. It was brought as breaking news, and they were worried seeing the images of tsunami. Also I was able to reach my friends in Tokyo, and they said that it took about 3 to 4 hours to get home from work.
On the third day, I finally was able to get in contact with my friends in Sendai and Iwate. They were all safe. One of them got her car washed away, but still I’m glad that she was safe.
I almost cried when I saw the totally different images of the city, where I used to live, but I can not cry. We have to keep working. As I write another earthquake has happened.
I pray that as many people as possible will be saved, and I’ll try my best to do what I can do for them now.

秋田のこの冬　This Winter in Akita

今年の秋田の冬は、雪がホントにすごかった！
この大雪は多くの秋田県民に影響を与えた。
私はこれまで「無事故」「優良ドライバー」を誇っていたが、なんと３回も事故に遭い、この大雪では私の優良運転も敵わないということを思い知った。その都度車を修理に出し、初めてJAFや警察のお世話にもなった。
あるJAFのおじさんによると、中には警察に怒られる人もいるらしいけど、私に対応してくれた警察の人たちはみんな優しかった。

一方デレクはと言えば、車が横転した時となりに乗っていて、さぞかし怖い思いをしただろうと心配していたのも束の間、「横転する瞬間はワクワクしたよ！」などと余裕のコメント！やっぱりアメリカ人だな～と思った。しかしながらこの緊急時にデレクがいてくれて、本当に助かった！私がもし一人だったらきっと何もできなかった。
今はだんだん暖かくなって来たけど、まだまだ寒い！といってもワシントンDCの、あの耳がちぎれそうな寒さにはかなわないけど！

We had a massive amount of snow in Akita this year
It inflicted many damages on people in Akita.
I was proud of having no accident and being a good driver…until this year. I got three car accidents because of the snow! My good driving couldn’t defeat the evil snow. I called JAF and the police for the first time in my life, and had my car repaired three times.
According to a JAF man, some people get yelled at by the police. But they were all kind to me this time.
Derek, on the other hand, was next to me and was amused when the car rolled over even though I was so worried about him because I made him get scared! I thought that’s American. But I was really thankful for him and releaved to be with him in that emergency situation. I wouldn’t do anything if I was by myself.
Now it’s getting warm, but still very cold! Though it can’t compete with the cold, that torn off my ears in Washington DC.

寺内『ピッツェリアナポリ』　Pizzeria Napoli: Terauchi

14日のバレンタインデーは家で過ごそうと思っていたけど、デレクを職場に迎えに行って買い物に行って家に戻ってごはん作って…ってやるにはちょっと遅い時間だったので、急遽どっかに食べに行くことにした。ところがこの日は月曜日！お店のほとんどは定休日だ。が、ここは違った！

『ナポリ』は以前セリオンにあった頃、よく友達のユキコちゃんと仕事帰りにごはんを食べに行った。お店が寺内に移ってから初めて来たけど、やっぱりここのパスタを食べると幸せを感じる♥（ま、いつも何か食べてシアワセ感じてますが…）

それにしてもバレンタインデーだと言うのに、あまりカップルを見かけなかった。みんな何をして2月14日を過ごしたのだろうか？んー気になる。
Derek and I thought we would stay at home on the Valentine’s Day, but considered with picking up Derek at work, going shopping for dinner, going back home and then making dinner…it was too late to do any of them so we decided to eat out at the last minute. But it was Monday! Most restaurants are closed on Monday, it’s their day off, but this restaurant was not the one of them!
When Napoli used to be in Serion the Tower, in Tsuchizaki, my friend Yukiko and I often went for dinner after work. It was my first time after they moved into the current place, and I felt happy with their pasta like I did before! (Though I always feel happy when eating…)
Anyway it was Valentine’s Day but we didn’t see any couples outside. I wonder how they spent on the special day…Hmmm, I’m curious!

オーストラリア旅行⑥～オーストラリアのおかし～ My Trip to Australia 6 ~The sweets in Australia~

デレクに「オーストラリアのおかし買ってきて」と言われてすぐ頭に浮かんだのがこの3つ！どれも思い出のおかしたちだ。

オーストラリアと言えばやっぱりTimTam！私も大ファンで、毎日食べ続けてたほどの大好物である。セールだと$1.99で買えるので、安い時に買いだめし、毎日１ピースずつちまちまと大切に食べていた。私のお気に入りはベリー味！甘くておいしい♥

それからアンザッククッキー。これは昔、戦争に行く息子のために母親が作って持たせたもので、歴史を感じることができる一品。一度食べたら止まらない！

そして最後はRoyals。これは5年前、オーストラリア生活も終盤に差し掛かったところで、TimTam以外のお菓子をあまり試していないことに気付いて買ってみたもの。ビスケットの上にマシュマロが乗っかっててそれをチョコレートでコーティングしたもの。これが意外とおいしいかったのだ♪

デレクはどれもおいしく食べてたけど、特にオーストラリア以外ではなかなか食べれないアンザッククッキーに感動していた。
オーストラリアへ行ったら、この３つをぜひお試しあれ！

When Derek told me to buy some Australian sweets, these three sweets came to my mind. They all remind me of old memories.

Speaking of Australian sweets, you can’t talk about it without TimTam! I’m such a big fan of it that I ate it every day. You can get it for only $1.99 on sale, so I bought a lot of packs of it when it was cheaper, and ate them one by one every day. My favourite was berry.

And ANZAC cookies. According to the introduction on the package, Australian mothers made this cookies for their son who went to the war. It’s kind of a historical and you can’t stop eating cookies!

And at last, Royals. When my life in Australia was getting over, I realized that I hadn’t tried much sweets except TimTam, so I tried Royals. They’re like s’more, a marshmallow on a cookie, covered with chocolate. It was much better than I expected!

Derek likes all of them, but he was impressed by ANZAC cookies because it’s something you can’t get outside Australia.

オーストラリア旅行⑤～オーストラリアのビーチ～ My Trip to Australia 5 ~The beach~

オーストラリアに1年近くも住んでたのに、今回初めて知ったことがある。それはこの『ブルーボトル』の存在！とーってもきれいで思わず手にとってみたくなるけど、実は猛毒を持っていて（！）刺されたら病院行きの大変な生き物なのだ。

オーストラリアのいくつかのビーチがこのブルーボトルが大量発生したため立ち入り禁止になったとか。このビーチにも無数のブルーボトルが波打ち際に線を描いて連なってたけど、人々はお構いなしにひょいっとよけてサーフィンしたり泳いだり…子ども連れの家族もたくさんいた。私は普段から気をつける習慣がないので気付けばホストファザーに何度も注意されていた。

ホストマザーいわく、「オーストラリアにはオーストラリア特有の美しい生き物やかわいい動物がたくさんいるけど、中には危険なものも同じくらいたくさんいる。だからうまく付き合っていかなければいけないのよ」と。

オーストラリアのビーチではブルーボトルとの『共存』をお楽しみあれ！ただしビーサンをお忘れなく！

I had lived in Australia for nearly one year, but there’s a thing that I got to learn about for the first time on this trip. It was this, the “blue bottle”! It was so beautiful and you may want to hold it on your hand, but actually it’s poisonous and you would go to the hospital if you got stung!

I heard that some of the beaches in Australia closed because of the massive outbreaks of this creature. I could see a long line of numerous blue bottles on the edge of the surf of this beach, but people didn’t care and hopped over the line and enjoyed surfing or swimming…There were also many families with children. It was not accustomed to walking on the beach and avoiding the blue bottles so I was told by my host father to be careful.

My host mother said that, there are many beautiful indigenous creatures or cute animals in Australia, as well as dangerous ones. So we need to get along together.

Don’t forget your beach sandals when you walk on the beach in Australia and have fun with the blue bottles!

オーストラリア旅行④～マーケットめぐり inシドニー～ My Trip to Australia 4 ~Going Around Markets in Sydney~

私がシドニーでどうしても行きたかった場所の一つが、このグリーブマーケット！！毎週土曜日に開催され、住んでた当時はほとんど毎週のように出かけていたほど大好きなマーケットなのだ。今回この場所に来ることができて、本当にシアワセだった～♥♥♥

　ここで買ったもの→小さい革バッグ（$35）、ミラー（小さい傷があったため~~$40~~→$20）、
　　　　　　　　　　　　　インドカレー（$7.50）、さとうきびジュース（$3.50）

ミラーは、木製フレームを売っているおじさんのところで購入。昔から憧れのお店で、今回このおじさんを見つけた時はもう飛び上るほどうれしかった！♥スーツケースに入りそうな大きさのものを選んで買ったが、実際収まるどころのものではなかった…

《グリーブマーケット　Glebe Market》

私の腕と同じくらいの大きさのミラーを必死にかかえて、もう腕はつりそう…でもどうせだからロックスマーケット（土日開催）にも行ってみることにした。ちょっとお高めのマーケットだけど、伝統的なものから現代アートチックなものまでいろいろ売られている。マーケットの方がオーストラリアっぽいものが手に入るし、おみやげは全部ここで買うことにして大正解だった！　

ここで買ったもの→はちみつ（$8）、みんなへのおみやげ（$30くらい）、レモネード（$3）

母に「あったら買ってきて～」と言われていたはちみつ（しかもオーストラリア産！）を見つけて即購入！他にもいろいろかわいいものが売っていた。いろいろ歩き＆買いすぎて、もうクタクタ～。でも納得のいく買い物ができて、と～っても満足♪

シドニーに来たら、マーケット巡りは外せない！！

One of the places that I really wanted to visit in Sydney was Glebe Market! It opens only on Saturdays and I LOVE this market so much that I visited there almost every week when I lived in Sydney a few years ago! I was so happy to come back to this place this time.

Things I bought here→ small leather bag ($35), mirror (~~$40~~→$20 because of a scratch on it), Indian curry ($7.50), sugarcane juice ($3.50)

I bought the mirror at a shop that is known for handmade wooden frames. I’d longed to buy some stuff from there, so I got excited when I found him there! I chose the one which looked like it would fit my suitcase, but actually it was far from fitting.

It was not easy to carry the mirror, which was the same length as my arm, but I still tried to visit one more market called Rocks Market (opens on Saturday and Sunday). It’s kind of expensive, but you can find a variety of stuff, from traditional to artistic.　I thought I could get something nice and made in Australia, so I decided to buy souvenirs for my friends here.

Thing I bought this market→ honey ($8), souvenirs ($30), lemonade ($3)

My mom asked me to buy some honey if I had chance. I found it here (the one made in Australia!) and purchased it immediately! I could find many fancy things here. I looked around for a long time and it made me tired. But I was very happy with what I got!

オーストラリア旅行③～ショッピングin メルボルン～ My Trip to Australia ~Shopping in Melbourne~

前々からテサ（ホストファミリーの娘）がメルボルンに連れてってくれると言っていたが、実は私はこれをかなり楽しみにしていた♥

以前は学生らしく細々とした生活を送っていたため、贅沢にショッピングなどしたことがなかった。でも今は社会人！年明けはセール期間だし、おまけに１２月にボーナスが入ったばかりというショッピングには絶好のチャンス！！かなり買い物する気満々でメルボルンにやって来た☆

メルボルンはファッションの街で、メルボルンにしかない人気のショップもたくさんあるのだとか。そんなオシャレなお店を何件も回り、私はワンピースを２着、バッグを２つ、ブーツを１足買った。もうかわいいものがありすぎて、財布にブレーキをかけるのが大変だった。

それにしても、オーストラリアの女の子はおしゃれ☆ 着こなしがラフなのにオシャレに見える。私も早く買ったばかりのワンピースを着たい！

あー、夏が待ち遠しい！

My friend Tessa (as well as one of my host family member) had said that she was taking me to Melbourne, and I’d always been excited about it!

When I was in Australia before, I was a student and picked up a scant livelihood, so I never went shopping that much. But now I have work! The shops were almost all on sale, and I just got a bonus in December, which means that it was a good opportunity for shopping! I came to Melbourne and was ready to shop a lot!!

I heard that Melbourne is the city of fashion. Tessa said there were many popular designers’ shops in Melbourne that can’t be found anywhere outside of the city. We shopped around at those fancy shops, and I bought two summer dresses, two bags and a pair of boots. I found so many things that I liked, it was hard for me to stop opening my wallet.

I thought girls in Australia looked really fashionable. I liked their way to dress and they looked well dressed even though casual. I’d like to wear the new dress in the warm weather.

I can’t wait for summer!!

オーストラリア旅行②～ホストファミリー～　My Trip to Australia ~Host Family~

今回は昔お世話になったホストファミリー宅に滞在した。

ホストファーザーはたまにスカイプで連絡をくれていたので、私の近況報告は彼を通してファミリーにも伝わっていた。ホストマザーに会った時も、「ボーイフレンドができたことも何でも知ってるわ！」と言われた。

一日目の夕飯は、オーストラリア名物ミートパイ！売ってるやつより中にお肉がいっぱい入っていてとってもおいしかった♪

５年前、この家に来て最初に食べた夕飯はコンビーフだった。想像以上においしすぎて感動したのを今でも覚えている。あの味が忘れられないとホストマザーに話したら、なんと今回もまた作ってくれた。

食事をしながら、デレクはアメリカのどこの出身なのかとか、日本が好きなのかとか、なんで連れてこなかったとか、次来た時は２人でここに泊ってもいいとか、デレクに関していろいろな話になった。デレクはいないけど、２人そろって温かく家族に迎えられたような気分になった。

次は一緒に来ようと思った。

I stayed with my old host family.

My host father sometimes Skyped me and caught up with each other, and they all know about it. My host mother even said “I heard everything about you, even that you got a boyfriend!”

The dinner for the first day was meat pie, one of the Australian foods. It has more meat inside than the one sold at a shop. It was very good!

The food I ate on the first day in Australia 5 years ago was corned beef. I still remember it was much more delicious than I thought, and was impressed! I told my host mother about it, and she made it again for me!

It was soooooooo delicious!!!
I was very happy.

While dining, they asked something about Derek like, about whereabouts in America is Derek from, about if he likes Japan and about why I didn’t bring him, and also said that we can stay with them next time I bring him there. I felt like both of us were welcomed by the family.

I thought I will definitely bring him next time.

オーストラリア旅行①　～５年ぶりのシドニー～　My Trip to Australia ~first time in Sydney in 5 years~

今年は正月休みがゆっくりとれそうだったので、海外ひとり旅に出かけようと考えていたが、候補がたくさんあってなかなか行先が決まらなかった。でもやっぱり最後に選んだのはオーストラリア！！特にこれといって行きたいところはなかったけど、どうしても昔お世話になったホストファミリーに会いたくて決めた。というわけでデレクを秋田に残して、５年ぶりの渡豪はどんな感じなんだろう？と胸を躍らせつつ、一人オーストラリアへ渡った♪

　久々のシドニーは、懐かしいというよりむしろまったく新鮮な感覚だった。見慣れた景色のはずなのに…？もう忘れてしまったのか？などと思ったけど、そうではなかった。ホストファミリーとの再会は号泣だった。電車でSt. Leonards駅やMeadowbank駅（昔通った学校の最寄り駅）を通った時、当時の頑張っていた自分を思い出して泣きそうになった。駅のアナウンス、電車のにおい、オーストラリアなまり…どれも昔につながってきた。

５年のブランクは徐々に消えていった。

It seemed like I would be able to take a long time off during the New Year’s holidays, so I decided to travel, but I had to go by myself because Derek was not able to join me. I couldn’t pick the place to go easily because there were many candidates that I was interested in. I finally decided on Australia at last! I didn’t have any particular places that I wanted to go, but I really wanted to see my old host family and that became the deciding factor. That’s why I left Derek behind in Akita (Sorry, Derek.), and headed to Australia wondering how the feeling I would have being in Australia for the first time in 5 years.

It was a completely fresh feeling that I felt in Sydney, rather than something that reminded me of the old days. Was it supposed to look familiar…? Did I already forget? I wondered like that, but I was wrong. When I saw my host family, I broke into tears. When I passed St.Leonards station or Meadowbank station (The nearest stations to my old schools.) by train, I felt close to tears remembering the time I struggled at school. The boarding announcement at the station, the smell in the train, hearing the Australian accent…it started connecting to the old times that I remember.

My 5 years blank was gradually fading away.

初詣 New Year's visit to a shrine

デレク宅にほど近い秋田護国神社へ初詣に行った。２日だからか行列も短かったけど、ずーっと立ってるのは寒い！！今年も幸せな一年になるようお参りをしてから、いざおみくじへ！気合入れて引いた結果、中吉だった…

・願事…早く叶いて喜びあり
・旅立…何れに行くも損なし
・争事…騒がずとも自ら勝つ
・出産…安心せよ　難なし

…中吉だけど大吉並のコメント！本当にこんな一年になったらいい。
ちなみにデレクは小吉。

・待人…おそいが来る
・旅立…盗難用心せよ

んー、小吉っぽい。「悪い人にさまたげられて思わぬ失敗をするから交際に気をつけるように」ってなことが書いてあった。ほんと、気をつけてほしい。

We went to Akita Gokoku Jinja (shrine) which is reasonably close to Derek’s place. The line in front of the shrine was rather short, but it was very cold just standing in the line! We made a wish like that we have a happy year ahead, and then went and drew paper fortunes! I drew it with confidence, but it was only “average good luck”…

*fight…Calm down, you’ll win
*birthing…No worries, no problem

It was an “average good luck,” but the comments were like an “excellent luck”!

By the way, Derek drew “less luck.”

Hmmm, sounds more like “less luck.” It also said that “Be careful for your social relationship because some bad people will get in your way and cause failure.” I’d like him to be careful.

秋田の１月２日　On January 2nd in Akita

他の地域ではどうなのかは謎だけど、この辺のうちでは１月２日の朝食は「特製とろろごはん」と決まっている。私の年に一回の大好物だ！

とろろに醤油、味噌、酒をまぜ、それをご飯にかけて、ネギ＆塩じゃけを添えていただくものだが、家庭によっては梅干を入れたりしているところもあるそう。家にいなかったり寝坊したりすると食べられない貴重なもので、私自身これを食べるのは何年ぶり…。今年は食べることができてラッキー☆

I’m not sure about the other areas, but around my area we eat special grated yam for breakfast on January second. My once a year favorite!

Just add soy sauce, miso (fermented soybean paste) and sake to grated yam, put it on rice, and eat with some green onion and salted salmon. Depending on families, some people seem to eat it with umeboshi (pickled Japanese apricot). I ate it for the first time in years…because you miss it if you are not home or you oversleep on the day. Derek and I were lucky to have it this year!

秋田の元旦　New Year’s Day in Akita

あけましておめでとうございます！！（今となってはもう遅いが…）

日本ではお正月におせちやお餅を食べるのが一般的で、うちでは母が作ったお雑煮と、父が八郎潟の「畠栄」で買ってくるあんごま餅を食べるのが習慣になっている。

おせちは、お母さんたちが正月を台所から離れてゆっくり過ごせるように日持ちするものが多く入っているという。しかしうちの母は、親戚がたくさん集まるので料理の買い出しやら下準備やらで普段より１００倍忙しい。

この夜は親戚総勢１５人が集まった。群馬から帰って来たいとこたちはちょうどデレクと同じ年頃で、初対面だったけど話が盛り上がって意気投合！夏にキャンプに行こうということになった。

今年も楽しい一年になりますように☆

Happy New Year!! (I know it’s too late for now…)

In Japan it’s very common that we eat osechi or mochi (sticky rice) on New Year’s Day. And my family makes it a habit to have ozouni that my mom makes and angoma-mochi that my dad buys from a shop called Hataei in Hachirogata.

It’s said that we eat osechi because it lasts long so that mothers don’t have to cook and can rest during New Year holidays. But my family has many guests on New Year’s Day so my mom is extremely busy with shopping or preparing for cooking.

About 15 relatives got together on this night for dinner. My cousins, visiting back from Gunma, are around Derek’s age, and they had a good conversation even though they met for the first time. We made a plan to go camping in summer.

I hope this year is also full of joy.

秋田のおおみそか New Year’s Eve in Akita

去年はデレクの故郷アメリカ・メリーランド州で本場のクリスマスを体験したけど、今年はデレクに日本（秋田）のお正月を体験してもらった。

秋田のうちの地域では、おおみそかにおせちを食べる。

ちょうど紅白が始まるくらいにおせちを始め、紅白が終わるころに年越しそばも食べる。だから新年は超満腹の状態で迎えることになるのだ。

デレクは果敢におせちの中の数の子やハタハタずし（秋田名物）にチャレンジ☆
日本（特に秋田）は独特の食べ物が多いけど、デレクはほとんど好き嫌いをしないで食べる。ほとんどの外国人が手をつけないような日本食でもデレクは普通に食べたりするから、一緒にいて楽だし、なによりも感心する。

そんなデレクには今度、ぜひおいしい白子の天ぷらを食べてもらいたい♥

I experienced an authentic Christmas in Derek’s hometown, Maryland last year. And this year Derek experienced the Japanese way to spend New Year’s Day.

We usually eat food called osechi on New Year’s day in Japan. But around my area in Akita, we eat osechi for dinner on the New Year’s Eve.

Osechi is a Japanese traditional New Year’s food. We starts to eat it around the time Kohaku (national music program) starts, and we eat toshikoshi-soba(year crossing noodles), around the time Kohaku finishes. So we usually enter the New Year’s Day with being full.

Derek tried to eat kazunoko(herring eggs) or hatahata-sushi bravely. Some Japanese (Akita) food is very unique, but he’s less than picky about food and eats almost everything. He can even eat Japanese food that foreigners tend to avoid, so I feel at ease with him, and also, impressed.

I’d like him to try delicious soft roe tempura some day.

２人同窓会＋１人　2 People Reunion Plus 1

１２月３０日（木）は高校時代の友人rikoakomamaちゃんとラクスミでランチ☆デレクは初対面だ。rikoakomamaちゃんは芦屋に住む２児のママ。見た目も生活もすっかり芦屋マダムになってしまったのか！？と心配したのも束の間、会った瞬間に昔にタイムスリップ=3 高校時代同様、私たちは延々とトホウもない話を繰り返しては爆笑した。デレクは我々の意味不明な会話を理解できたかな？？また会おうね！！

On December 30th, Derek and I met rikoakomama, one of my friends from high school, for lunch. Derek met her for the first time. She is a mother of two little cute girls living in Ashiya, Hyogo. And also she is a reader of my blog, and wanted to see Derek one day! I was a bit worried for her fashion or life being like Ashiya madam, but I found out I was wrong as soon as I met her! We talked like we did in the old days and laughed like it too! I wonder if Derek understood our conversation. Let’s hang out soon again!

クリスマスプレゼント from the US! Christmas Presents from the US!

子どもの頃は、クリスマスの朝起きると枕元にプレゼントがいっぱい置いてあって、学校に行かなきゃいけないというのにリボンを開けるのに夢中…なんてこともあったが、プレゼントを開けるときのワクワク感は大人になっても同じだった！

今年はアメリカからたくさんのプレゼントをいただいた☆

まずはデレクの両親から。
郵便局に荷物を取りに行ってびっくり。

デレクが入れそうなくらい、箱が超デカい！

中にはデレク宛のプレゼントや食料品・日用品がどっさり入ってて、次から次へと手にとって見るのが楽しかった。そしてなんと私宛のプレゼントも入っていて、クリスマス前だったけどうれしすぎて速攻開けた。デレクはちゃんと自分宛のプレゼントをクリスマスツリーの下に置いていた。

そしてこれはモーリーンから。滝のカレンダーと、去年の冬に話題になった“石炭”のガム！モーリーンが私が滝が好きだと言うことや、共通の思い出話をまだ覚えていてくれたことがすごくうれしかった。

そして最後に年が明けてからもらったデレクからのＣＤ！
アメリカから輸送されるのに時間がかかって、大変だったらしいけど、このおかげで毎朝の長距離通勤が苦痛でなくなった。

When I was a kid, I found a lot of presents next to the pillow, and open them up like crazy even though I had to go to school…The excitement when opening presents is still with you no matter how old you are!

Derek and I got a lot of presents from America.

First of all, from Derek’s parents.
I was surprised when we went to the post office to pick it up.

It was huge enough Derek would just fit it!!

There were many presents, food and daily stuff for Derek, and I also enjoyed looking at them holding in my hands one by one. And there were some presents for me too! I was so happy and open them up. On the other hand, Derek put presents under the very small Christmas tree in his room.

And then, from Maureen. She sent me a calendar with waterfalls(My favorite!!) and coal gum! She told me about the coal story on Christmas before. I was so glad that she still remembered my favorite and common memories.

At last, from Derek.
He gifted me two CDs. It seemed to be tough taking a long time shipping them from America, but thanks to them I never get bored during long driving to work.

フ・レ・ン・ズ in 秋田駅前　 F.R.I.E.N.D.S in front of Akita Station

このメンバーで集まるのはホントに久しぶり！１２月２９日（火）はいつもの仲間と秋田駅前金座街「cafe bar 集」で忘年会をした。

今回の話題は修学旅行報告（カズ、まどかちゃん、ナオミ）、まどかちゃんの京都みやげ『阿修羅ストラップ』について、田沢湖でのスノボー合宿計画について、ナオミの交通事故について、カズの「日本にハグ文化を広めよう！」計画について、などなど。しかしどんな話題も、ユキがときたま投下するいつもの爆弾発言に次々とかき消されていった。

終電に乗り込んですぐ、カズたちから電話があった。カズはよほどハグを定着させたいのか、終電にもうすでに乗り込んでいた私、ユキ、デレクの３人をわざわざ改札口まで呼び出し、出発まであと数分だというのにハグをし始めた。次々とハグし、最終的には７人全員で円陣を組んでるかのようになった。

うちららしい、年のしめくくりだった。

It’s been so long since we got together! I had a year end party with the usual suspects at a restaurant called, Cafe Bar Shu, in Kinza-gai in front of Akita station.

Today’s topic was about our school trip to Tokyo (Kazu, Madoka, Naomi), about the Asura strap that Madoka bought as a souvenir to everyone in Kyoto, about making a plan for snowboarding tour to the Tazawako ski resort, about my car accident, about Kazu’s plan of spreading hug culture around in Japan and so on. But all of the topics were washed out by Yuki’s bombshell statements that he dropped time after time.

Soon after we got on a train, Kazu called me. Guess he wanted to spread the hug culture around so bad, but he called the three of us over, Yuki, Derek and me, who were already waiting on a train, to the gate and gave all of us big hugs even though our train would leave in a few minutes. We hugged one after another and at last we looked like we made a circle with 7 people!

It looked more like us to finish a year in that way.

クリスマス自宅パーティー　　Family Christmas Party

１２月２５日（土）のクリスマスは自宅deパーティー♪ 秋田に住むうちの親戚が勢ぞろいしデレクは初対面した。みんな緊張気味だったけど、お酒も入ると打ちとけた雰囲気に☆デレクが作ったラザニアも大好評だった！

今回再びラザニアを作ったのにはワケがある。

以前ラザニアをオーブンで焼くのを、母が手伝ってくれたことがあった。そのラザニアはジョー&サヤカちゃんちに持って行ったのだけど、デレクが言うには、そのとき母がとても食べたそうな顔をしていたと！それを聞いて母は大爆笑だった。

日本のクリスマスはカップルで過ごすことの方が一般的で、家でもパーティーなんて今まで開いたことなどなかった。しかしなぜ今回こんなに人が集まったかと言うと…

うちの父がクリスマスライティングにはまり、みんなにそれを見せびらかしたかったからなのだ。

私たちは赤や青や緑に光る無数のライトやトナカイに囲まれながら、チキンやすしやラザニアやケーキを食べ、記念すべき『第一回クリスマスパーティー』を楽しんだ。

There was a family Christmas party at my home on December 25th! All my relatives living in Akita got together at house and Derek met them for the first time. At first they all looked really shy, but the atmosphere started getting relaxed after drinking some beer. The lasagna Derek made was really popular!

There was a reason that Derek made lasagna again this time.

One day my mother helped us with baking the lasagna in the oven. We brought it to Joe & Sayaka’s, but Derek said that my mom looked like she wanted to eat it! She bursted into laughing to hear that!

In Japan, it’s common that people spend time with their boyfriend or girlfriend on Christmas day. There hadn’t been any parties on that day at home either. Then why did so many people get together this time is?

Because my dad was into Christmas lights and wanted to show them off to everyone!

We ate chicken, sushi, lasagna and a piece of cake, while surrounded by the countless blue, green, red lights… and enjoyed the memorable first Christmas party.

秋田ふるさと検定　Akita Furusato Kentei

秋田には、地元のことをどれだけ知っているかを問う「秋田ふるさと検定」というものがある。毎年11月に行われているのだが、これの2級にな・ん・と！合格した。

秋田県内はデレクとも結構出歩いてる方だったので、最初は「いけるかも！」と考えてたけど、実際知らないことの方が多くて、だんだん不安に…とにかく気合を入れて勉強しまくった。結果は合格で、数字からすると上位3位に入る得点だったので、とにかく「勉強した甲斐があった～！」とうれしい気持ちでいっぱいになった。

これに合格したところで、特に何ってことはないのがやや悲しいが。

There’s a test called the “Akita Furusato Kentei”, which tests you how much you know about Akita. The test is held once a year in November, and I passed the second highest leveled test.

I usually go out almost everywhere in Akita with Derek, so at first I thought “I could pass it easily.” But actually there were much more things about Akita that I didn’t know than things I knew, and that made me feel nervous… So I rolled up my sleeves and went on a studying spree. The result was a “Pass” and my score was in the top 3! I’m glad I can look back and feel like it was worth it.

Though it’s sad because it has no meaning even if you passed the test…

旅行のテーマ　The Theme of the trip

私はよくテーマを決めてドライブや旅行に出かけているが、先日東京への修学旅行で同じようにテーマを決めて自由研修に臨んだ生徒がいた。彼のテーマは、

「あいさつをがんばる。」

私も途中から彼のチームと合流したのだが、仲間の話では自由研修中すれ違うあらゆる人に「こんにちは」とあいさつしていたらしい。その後もすれ違うたびに大変立派なあいさつをしていたが、そんな彼に「結果はどんな感じ？」と聞いてみると…

「だいたい4分の１の人があいさつを返してくれました。」

ってことは…、

「東京にはいい人もいる。」
「街中で突然あいさつされてもちゃんと即答してくれる人もいた。」
「なんだこいつみたいな目で見る人もいた。」
「まぁ、ほとんどの人はしかとでしたけどね。」

などとみんなで結果分析している。

何がすごいって、自分でテーマを決めて結果を出して、分析までしちゃってるところがすごい！！この大胆不敵な行動力が、もしかしたら社会に出た時に必要になるのかもしれない。さすが中学生！見習わなければっ！

I often decide the theme when I go for a drive, a trip, or something. There was a student who also decided his own theme for his school trip to Tokyo. His theme was…

“Greeting people.”　
(Students usually greet teacher when they meet in the school.)

I joined his group in free time, and according to his friends’ story, he had said “Hi” to almost everyone passing on the road thus far. After I joined he kept politely saying “Hi” to people. After while I asked him something like, “How’s it coming along??” and he answered,

“About one out of four people said “Hi” back to me.”

That means…

- There are nice people in Tokyo too.
- Some people said “Hi” back even though they were spoken to suddenly.
- Some people looked at me with a ”What the hell is this boy doing?” expression.
- Most of the people ignored my greeting.

What was great is that he decided his theme, found out the result and analyzed it! They might need the courage to take action when they grow up. That’s the life of junior high school students! I think I should emulate them!

ハマった。

今は4人の子どもを育てるのと、家を増築するのに大忙しっ=3

Now I’m busy with raising four girls and building an extension on their house!

I’m worried if I’m going to be called a “gamer”…

日曜のランチタイム　Sunday Lunch Cafe at home

今月5日（日）デレクと一緒に、ジョー&サヤカちゃん宅を訪問☆お二人には夏に生まれたかわいい女の子、蓮（れん）ちゃんがいる。
←こちらが蓮ちゃん♥ジョーはなんと身長１９５ｃｍもあるから、ジョーが抱っこすると蓮ちゃんはとっても小さく見える！

この日はデレクと前々からラザニアを作って持っていこうと話していたけど、実は2人ともラザニアを作るのは初めて。最初はうまくできるか心配だったけど、デレク母の魔法のレシピでとーってもおいしく出来上がった。

我ながらうまい♪といっても作ったのはほとんどデレクだけど…
おかげで楽しいランチタイムになった。ジョー&サヤカちゃんも喜んでくれてよかった～☆

その後も時間を忘れるくらい話に夢中になっちゃってて、気付くと外はもう真っ暗=3=3=3パートナーが外国人という同じ境遇なだけに、話を聞いてると共感できることや参考になることがたくさんあった。
とっても心強い！

私もデレクも「今日は楽しすぎた！」といって家に戻って来た(^-^)
また次回会うのが楽しみ♪

Derek and I went to visit our friends Joe & Sayaka on the 5th of this month. They have a cute little baby girl named Ren, who was born this summer!

This is Ren. Joe is about 195cm tall (wow!) and Ren looked so tiny in his arms when he held her!

Derek and I were planning to make and bring lasagna for lunch, and it would be the first time making it for both of us. I was worried if it would be good, but it turned out beautifully with Derek’s mom’s magic recipe!

It was really delicious!! Though Derek made almost all of it.
We had a very good lunch with lasagna and friends. I’m glad Joe & Sayaka liked it!

After that we talked and talked so much that we forgot about the tim. We soon noticed that it was already dark outside! Talking with them, there were many things that I could share the feeling, and that were really helpful because we were in the similar situation; our partners are from overseas. I felt reassured!

Derek and I came back home thinking,”It was so much fun!”
We really look forward to seeing them again!

実は私たちが作ったのだ～☆
こないだの日曜日（11月21日）、ハルちゃんとメグちゃんと太平にある『グラススタジオヴェトロ』で、吹きガラスの体験をしたのだが、その時の作品が完成したので取りに来た。

店内で売られている小鉢を見て、「あんな感じのを作りたい！」って初めは意気込んでたけど、さすがに職人さんのようにはいくわけもなく…でも手伝ってもらいながら味のある作品を作ることができた。今は部屋のインテリアとしていい雰囲気出してるよっ♪

Last Sunday(Nov 21st), we went to Glass Studio Vetro in Taihei to experience glass blowing.

Seeing a nice glass bowl at the shop, that was attached to the studio, I got all fired up. I thought to myself, “I want to make one like that!” But that could never happen…Though, I could make a simple bowl with one of the craftmen. Now it set a good atmosphere for the interior of my room!

文化の日　Culture Day

今日は文化の日。（11月3日）
午後から大潟デレク宅のBBQに行ってきました☆
このBBQに、ジョシュア（オーストラリア出身）が前々からカンガルーの肉を持ってくると張りきって言っていた。本当に日本で手に入るのかな～って不思議だったけど、なんとホントに持ってきた！カンガルーバーガー、とってもおいしかったよ！(^-^)/（写真がなくて残念！！）
そして18：00すぎ、全員がテレビの前に集合した。
何事！？
なんとジョン（ニューヨーク出身）が地元のニュースに出ているではないかっ！なんでもジョンが旧兵士のアメリカ人から戦時の日の丸を預かって来たらしく、それをぜひ遺族の元に返したい、というような内容。ぜひ見つかってほしい！

今年の文化の日は、いろんな意味で文化を意識できた。

Today was Culture Day.
Derek and I went to Ogata Derek’s for a BBQ!
Joshua, a friend of ours from Australia, said that he would bring kangaroo meat for this BBQ. I wondered if it was possible to get kangaroo meat in Japan, but he did it! The kangaroo burgers were really good! (no picture…shame!)

And at around 18:00, everyone got together in front of the TV.
What happens!?
Our friend Jon (from New York) was on the local news! It was about an old Japanese flag with names of Japanese warriors. Jon was given it by a former soldier to help find the warrior’s family and give it to them. I hope he’ll find them!

I was able to be aware of many cultural things in many different ways on Culture Day this year.

ハロウィーン☆　Halloween

今日はハロウィーン☆（10月31日）
御所野イオンで大きいカボチャが「ご自由にお持ち帰りください」と置かれているのを見て、デレクのジャックオーランタン魂に火がついた！？１個もらっていくことにした。

この後、デレクの上司さん宅で野球の打ち上げだったので、お子様たちとジャックオーランタン作りにチャレンジ！

意外と簡単～♪　子どもたちも大喜びでなにより！

今年は本格的なハロウィーンの雰囲気を味わうことができた☆

Today was Halloween!
We went to the AEON shopping mall in Goshono. At the mall we found some big pumpkins with a sign that said, “Please Take One.” Derek got a little excited thinking about making a Jack-O-Lantern, so took one.

After that we went to his boss’s place for drinks after baseball practice. Derek tried making a Jack-O-Lantern with the kids!

It was easier than I expected. The kids seemed to have fun making it and looked really happy with it!

This year I could feel the atmosphere of real Halloween with it too!

須川温泉『栗駒山荘』　Kurikoma Sanso: Sukawa Hot Spring

栗駒エリアにはいい温泉がたくさんあって、どこに行くか毎回悩むところなんだけど、今回はこの「栗駒山荘」をチョイス☆というのもまもなく道路が冬季閉鎖になるので、11月3日に今年の営業が終わる前に行ってみようと言うことになった。

栗駒山荘と言えば、なんといっても露天風呂から見える栗駒の壮大な景色！壁一面が切り取られたかのような露天風呂で、栗駒の紅葉を一人占め・・・♪ なんてことも本来は可能だが、この日はあいにくガスがかかっていて一寸先は雲の中…残念！でもお湯はとっても気持ちがよく、上がった後も肌に硫黄の香りが家まで残ってたよ！

ここの露天風呂は他の温泉とは違って自然と一体化している感じが味わえるので、ここに来たらとにかくどんなに天気が悪くても露天風呂に入ることをお勧めします！

There are many good hot springs in the Kurikoma area, this always makes it hard for me decide soon… But this time we both decided to go to Kurikoma Sanso. I heard that the road would be closed soon, and as a result, it would have to stop service for this year on November 3rd. I really wanted to visit the place before it closed.

Kurikoma Sanso is renowned for its spectacular view of the Kurikoma area from the outside bath. It looks as if a piece of wall was removed and you could see the mountains with leaves of the trees chenging color extending all around you. But the fog was so thick that day and we were there that couldn’t see anything cleary…But the water felt so good and I could smell the scent of sulfur in my skin.

The outside bath is different from others because you can feel like you become a part of nature. I recommend trying the outside bath even if the weather was very bad!

小安峡 Oyasukyo

秋田には6つの活火山があるけど、そのうちの一つが栗駒山。今日はその火山活動の一部を垣間見れる「小安峡」にやって来た。

ここの見どころは、岸壁の隙間から98℃もある蒸気がものすごい勢いで噴き出ている「大噴湯」。

今日も勢いよく噴き出してるねっ！

少しでも蒸気と戯れようものなら、一瞬でびしょぬれ！私は片足を風呂にでも突っ込んだかと思うくらいにぬれた。

ここに来ると、「あー、大地は生きているんだなぁ」としみじみ実感する。

きれいな紅葉と自然の偉大さを味わいたいならぜひ小安峡へ☆

There are 6 active volcanoes in Akita, one of them is Mt. Kurikoma. Today Derek and I went to Oyasukyo where we could catch a glimpse of a part of Mt. Kurikoma’s activities.

The main spot here is Daifunto, where steam that is about 98 degrees Celsius comes from a gap in the rocks.

It was blowing a sharp blast of steam!

If you get close to the steam, you would definitely get wet! My leg got wet as if I soaked it in a bath tub.

I’m always reminded that the earth is alive when I visit this place.

湯沢『七代佐藤養助本店』　Nanadai Sato Yosuke Honten : Yuzawa

小安峡方面へ向かう途中にある、秋田名物稲庭うどんのお店『七代佐藤養助本店』にてランチ♪いつも観光客で混み合っているので、入ることができてラッキーだった☆
メニューの天ぷらが超うまそう♪ちょっとお高めだけど、私は『天ぷらうどん』、デレクは『二味天せいろ』を注文。揚げたてサクサクでおいし～い！

On the way to Oyasukyo, we had an udon called "Inaniwa udon.” It is a specialty of Akita as a lunchtime meal. Even though this place is usually crowded with many tourists at lunch time, we were able to get a table for the two of us!

The set with tempura looked really good on the menu. It was not cheap, but I went ahead and ordered a tempura udon, while Derek ordered udon with two kinds of soup. Those tempura in the picture were very delicious and crispy!

夏の暑さが思いのほか続いたせいか、紅葉の時期も例年より遅れている様子。なのにこないだはあられが降って、もう冬！？ってくらいに寒い！そろそろ見ごろを迎えている頃だろうと思い、今日は小安峡＆温泉へ行くことにした。

栗駒エリアはもうすでに冬！秋が短すぎて見ごろを外した～(TT)

Maybe it was because of the unusually hot and long summer because the time the leaves change color was late. We had hail the other day and it was really cold as if winter had come! We guessed that the time to see the color of the changing leaves had come, so decided to go to a place called Oyasukyo. It’s is a popular place for veiwing autumn leaves and hot spring.

ちょっと長めに置き、ミルクを加えて…ティータイム開始！

ミルクティーを飲んだ瞬間、幸せな気分になった～♪ 紅茶のおともは、横手『フレンドール』のロールケーキ。こちらもおいしい♪

小さなことでも、幸せを味わえるんだね。気分転換、大成功☆

The weekend is over…

To blow away this gloomy feeling on Sunday night, I planned to have a luxury tea time. I bought some pretty tea bags at a fancy shop.

Dip them for a while, add some milk and…tea time begins!

I felt very happy when I drank the milk tea. The cake was from Friendoll in Yokote. It was also good!

You can be happy with just a small thing. This way of refreshing myself became a great success!

10月24日（日）はハルちゃんと横手へドライブ☆　『北海道・東北Ｂ１グランプリ』が行われると知ったら、行かないわけにはいかないっしょ！

去年のＢ１に比べて行列もそんなに長くなく、私たちは「オホーツク北見塩焼きそば」、「八戸せんべい汁」、「いわてまち焼きうどん」、「納豆汁」、「美郷まんま」、「美郷たぬ中」、「本荘ハムフライ」を買った。残念なことに、ハムフライを床に落としてしまった…。

最近の横手はいろんなフェスティバルが開催され盛り上がっている様子。我々も協力しなければっ！

On the 24th of October, I went to Yokote for a drive with Haru. How could you resist going if you know there was a food festival called the Hokkaido-Tohoku B1 GP!

The lines in front of stalls were not as long as last year. We bought seven kinds of food but I dropped one of them, flied a slice of ham on the ground…

Yokote seems to have become a happening place by holding many kinds of festival. I feel like we should boost the mood together by joining all of the festivals!

にかほ『湯の台食堂』　Yunotai Shokudo: Nikaho

湯の台温泉に入った後、向かいに素朴感あふれる食堂を見つけて入ってみた。
うちらは中華そば、かけうどん、ギョーザと素朴なメニューを注文したが…
実はこのギョーザ、全然素朴ではなかった！素朴どころかうますぎ☆！

お会計をしようとした時、地元住民と思われるおじさんが「どごがら来たの？」とデレクに話しかけてきてくれて会話が弾んだ。どうやら温泉の男湯で一緒だったらしい。「日本語しゃべれだが？？んだ～、少しが。おいだば秋田弁しかしゃべれねものなー。」

この時、あることに気付いた。デレクは今までいろんな人に話しかけられてきたが、秋田の人は「自分は日本語しかしゃべれない」とは絶対言わない。

「秋田弁しかしゃべれない」と言う。（笑）

そんな温かい地元の人々と出会える片田舎の素朴な食堂が私は好きだ。

After taking a bath at Yunotai Onsen, Derek and I found a simple restaurant across the street. We ordered a simple menu of Chuka-soba(Ramen), udon and gyoza. But this gyoza was not just a simple gyoza. It was actually rather delicious!

When we tried to get the bill, a local old man asked to Derek, “Where are you from?” in Japanese. He said he saw Derek at the bath. “Can you speak Japanese? Oh, just a bit… I can only speak Akita-ben (Akita dialect)…”

I noticed something interesting then. Derek was talked to by many Japanese people, but people in Akita never said things like “I only speak Japanese.”

They say “I can only speak Akita-ben.”

I like simple restaurants that offers the chance to meet local people with warm hearts.

獅子ヶ鼻湿原　Shishigabana Marshland

今までずっと気になっていたけど、なかなか足を運ぶ機会がなかったのがこの獅子ヶ鼻湿原。こっち方面へ来ると、どうしても元滝の方に行ってしまうので…（´ω`；）数日前から大雨が降ってたけど、ここなら雨による土砂崩れの心配もないだろうということでやって来た=3

獅子ヶ鼻湿原と言ったらやっぱり、鳥海山からの湧き水と奇形ブナの大群。ブナには水を大量に保持する力があるそうで、伐採すると川が増水するのだとか。だからどんなに雨が降っても自然のダムが水を溜めておいてくれるってわけなのだ。

さて、軽装でも行けそうなこのコースだけど、クマよけの鈴は必須アイテム！他の人の鈴と合奏しながらいざ出発=3　とその前に、うれしいことに入り口に貸し出し用の杖が置かれていたので一本拝借した。

最初にチェックしたのは『出壺』（別名：クマの水飲み場）という最大の湧水ポイント。どこからともなく水が湧いて水面が揺れている様子に超感動！飲みたかったが、周辺の自然保護の観点から断念！

水路脇を通ってたどり着いたのは、あの世界的にも貴重な『鳥海マリモ』（コケ群落観測場所）！落ち葉で覆われている部分も多く、初夏に来るともっときれいなのかもしれない。

そして最後は奇形巨大ブナの『あがりこ大王』。その雰囲気から私は『ハリー・ポッターの木』と名付けた。樹齢300年以上ってすごい！ここまで生きて来てくれてうれしく思う。それにしてもブナは曲がりやすいと言われているけど、ちょっと曲がりすぎかな！？

今日は自然のしくみや偉大さを改めて実感。その自然に癒され、新しいお気に入りの場所も発見できて、とーーーっても満足♪　
さすが鳥海エリア！ハズレがないね☆

The place that I’ve always wanted to visit and didn’t have a chance to visit is this place, Shishigabana Marshland. That’s because Motodaki waterfall has always attracted me when I come to this area… It was raining over the last few days, but I thought this place would be free from worry of landslides compared with the mountains.

Shishigabana Marshland is famous for springs of water from Mt.Chokai and a host of malformed beech trees. Beech trees have an ability to hold a large amount of water underground. Enough that it would make the amount of water flowing in the rivers increase if we cut the trees. That’s why even if we have a lot of rain, the natural dam would be able to keep it.

The trail looked like we could go with light cloths, but you definitely need a bell to make bears stay away from you. Derek and I set off with my bell ringing with the others! But before that, I found many hiking sticks for mountaineering at the gate so I borrowed one.

The first best point we saw was the water spring called “Detsubo” or “Bear’s drinking Fountain”. The largest amount of water in this area comes out from the ground. The water comes from somewhere and it made the surface swing…I was impressed seeing it. I wanted to drink the water, but I gave up considering the conservation of the environment around the spring.

Walking along the waterway, we got to a place for Chokai Marimo, or spherical moss. Unfortunatelly most of them were covered with falling leaves. I thought it would be more beautiful in early summer.

And the last place we visited was a biggest malformed beech tree called “Agariko Daio”. But I named it “Harry Potter’s tree” because of its atmosphere. I can’t believe that it was 300 years old! I’m glad it’s still alive! The trunk of beech trees have a tendency to bend, but this tree’s bent too much!

I recognized that the nature was amazing. Furthermore I felt relaxed here and found a new favorite place to appreciate nature… I was so happy! That’s the Chokai area! It never dissapoints me!

October 11th was Health&Sports Day! I was planning to go to a waterfall called Kobeidaki in Ani, but it was cancelled because of a few days of continuous rain… I really wanted to relax surrounded by nature real badly, and decided to go to Shishigabana Marshland.

先日の話。

仕事帰りにデレク宅へ行ったらちょうど晩ごはんを作っていた。カレーだ♪
いいにおい～！と思いながらおたまでかき混ぜていたら、突然、

ゴロっ

なんとカレーの中に、殻付きたまご発見！
しかもちゃんと2個！（うれしいけど大爆笑=3）
なるほど、一緒にゆでてるのね…！うける、デレク！

でも出来上がりはおいしいかったよ！
ごちそうさまでしたー☆

The other day.

When I visited Derek’s place, he was cooking dinner. Curry and rice!
It smelled gooooood! I mixed it with a ladle and heard

Plock!

I found something hard in the soup. Two eggs!!
I was glad to see them, but I laughed and laughed!

I see, you boiled them with soup… You are funny!

The curry itself was very delicious!!

横手お城山クラフトフェア Oshiroyama Crafts Fair in Yokote

毎週のように横手に行っているような今日この頃！この日はマーケットがあると聞いて、どーーーしても行きたくなって一人で行ってきた（デレクは疲れてるようで留守番）。

会場はたくさんのテントが立ち並び、まるで私の大大大好きなシドニーのグリーブマーケットを思わせるような雰囲気♪　手作りのものが多く、私はシュシュとお皿2枚買ったよ☆　

こんなマーケットが秋田にもっと増えてほしい！

It looks like I go to Yokote every weekend…I heard that there would be a market in Yokote on this day, so I went there by myself (Derek was tired and stayed home).

There were many stalls and I felt like as if I was at the Greeb Market in Sydney which was my favorite one! Almost all the stuff sold there was handmade. I bought a scrunchy and two plates.

I wish I could come to a market like this more often!

八橋『インドレストランPeacock』　Indian Restaurant Peacock: Yabase

秋休み直前だからか仕事でほんっっっとに疲れた☆こんな時は外食に限る！ってことで、デレクを誘ってピーコックにやって来た。（カレー大好き！）

ここの何が良かったかというと、このナン！バター風味がきいててとーーーってもおいしかった♪

おいしいものを食べてる時はなんであんなに幸せな気持ちになるのだろう？♪　仕事の疲れを一気に吹き飛ばしてくれたおいしいごちそうに感謝！

I don’t know if it was because it’s just before the autumn holidays, but I was really exhausted from work…There’s nothing like eating something delicious when you are tired! That’s why Derek and I came to Peacock. (We love curry!!)

What appealed to me here was this naan! It was very good with a butter flavor!

Why do I feel that happy when I eat something delicious? I thank the beautiful food for blowing my tiredness from work away!!

カメラマンとしての第一歩 The first step as a cameraman

「インテル　みんなで作る〇△☐」のプロジェクト、『空の写真を投稿して来年の日めくりカレンダーを作ろう』にひそかに応募したところ、なんと！

私の写真が選ばれた！

約6700枚もの応募作品の中から第一弾で88枚が選ばれたみたいだけど、その中に入ったなんて自分でもびっくり！すぐさまデレクに電話してこの喜びを伝えた。

ちなみに選ばれたのはこの写真。

この日の雲は実に奇妙だった…
選ばれたのはそのおかげかも♪
当選者にはそのカレンダーが送られてくるとのこと。
楽しみ！

美しい秋田の風景をアピールできてよかった♪
さすがカメラマン！いや、カメラか…。

I sent my photo to a project of Intel’s, which is to make a page a day calendar using photos of the sky that people send in, and…

My photo was chosen!!

88 photos out of about 6700 were chosen in the first round. I was so surprised to find out that my photo was one of them! I called Derek right after and share the surprise and delight.

The cloud was really wired anyway…
Maybe that’s why it was chosen.
As a prize, they are giving the calender to the chosen 365 people.

I’m glad that it’ll be a good opportunity to share a grimpse of Akita’s beauty.
Because of me? Nah, thanks to my camera!

横手『朝菊』 Asakiku: Yokote

せっかく横手に来たので、横手焼そばを食べようということになった。
いろんなお店で横手焼そばを出してるけど、このとき2人とも心を惹かれたのはやっぱり「朝菊」。
かまくらの時に来て以来だ！

この店はおばあちゃんが一人で切り盛りしている。この日は宴会が入って忙しそうだったけど、ギリギリ入れてくれた。

この上にのっかってる目玉焼きと福神漬が横手焼そばのポイント。最初はこのとろける黄身に慣れなかったデレクも、今ではすっかりお気に入り☆

この店に来ると、店の中のお客さんと自然に会話が始まる。となりの宴会のおじさんによると、焼きそばを鉄板にのせて出すのは数ある店の中でもここだけなのだとか。
おばあちゃんのご厚意により、なんとごはんと秋刀魚もいただいた！

私たちは、もうすっかり、朝菊のとりこでアル♥

Since we came to Yokote, we decided to eat Yokote yakisoba for dinner.
There are many yakisoba places around this area, but the place which attracted us the most was Asakiku. We came back to this place after we went there during the last Kamakura festival!

An old lady runs this place by herself. She seemed very busy this day because she was having a big banquet later, but were able to make it at the last minute.

Yokote yakisoba is characterized by the sunny side egg on the top and the red stuff called Fukujin-zuke. Derek wasn’t used to eat runny eggs, but now he needs it on his Yokote yakisoba.

When we come to this place conversation with other people naturally starts. According to an old man sitting next to us from the banquet, he said that this was the only place that uses iron plates for yakisoba.
Through the courtesy of the old lady, we had rice, grilled saury, and vegetable for free!

We are treated very nicely by her!

今日は横手までドライブ！出かける前にデレクが朝食を作ってくれるというので楽しみにしながらデレク宅へ向かった♪
さっそく出てきたのはベーコンエッグとフライドポテト、そしてコーヒー。んー、朝食っぽいね～。次はどんなトーストが出てくるのかな？♪ ナガハマみたいな分厚いトーストかな？まさか気合入れてフレンチトーストだったりして！

Derek and I went for a drive to Yokote today! He said that he would make breakfast for us before we left, so I was looking forward to it and heading to his place.
First he served bacon egg, French fries, and coffee. Hmmm, looks more like breakfast. What kind of toast is coming next?? I wonder it might be a thick toast like Nagahama Cafe serves! Or he could make French Toast with feeling!

“Here,” said Derek.

千秋公園 Jazz Impression 　Senshu Park Jazz Impression

今日（9月19日）は『千秋公園Jazz Impression』の日♪
昨日太平山登山（1泊）から戻ったばかりで疲労困憊状態のデレクを引き連れて千秋公園へ行った。
私のお目当てはフリーマーケット☆かわいいお店がたくさんあって、足がもつれ気味のデレクを置き去りにしてぴょんぴょん目移りしてしまうほどだった！（すまぬ、デレク…）

そんなかわいいものがたくさんある中で、今まさに自分に必要なものが見つかった。
ティッシュケース！私と言うより、アレルギーのデレクのためにいつも持つようにしているのだけど、気付くとカバンの中でくしゃくしゃに…見るだけで憂鬱になってしまう状態に。。。でもこれがあればティッシュを持つのも楽しくなる！？うれしいことにデレクが買ってくれた。

買い物の後、私は蕎麦とイチゴジュースをすすりながら、デレクはカバブとビールをいただきながらジャズを聞いた。雨が降っても、千秋公園なら趣がある！

Today, September 19th, is the day of “Senshu Park Jazz Impression”! I took Derek who was completely exhausted by mountaineering to Mt.Taihei (over night) yesterday.
My main reason was for the flea market! There were many fancy shops there! I got so excited that I left Derek stumbling along behind and visited shop booths one after another (sorry Derek…).

I found exactly what I needed at the moment.
Tissue case! I always bring some tissues. But it’s rather for Derek who needs them because of his allergy, not me. When I have them in my bag, they get screwed up in there and it makes me gloomy…But I’ll definitely be happy to carry tissues in this! Derek bought this for me. How sweet!

After shopping, we sat down on a bench and listened to jazz while eating soba, kabab, beer, and strawberry juice. It was very quaint even though it was raining. Because it was at Senshu Park!

9月13日はデレクの誕生日！
デレクの誕生日を一緒に祝うのは、去年に引き続き２回目。去年は本人の希望で『男鹿水族館ＧＡＯ』に行った。今年の希望は『ラクスミのカレー』とのことだったので、仕事が終わってから早速ラクスミに行った。

相変わらずすごいボリューム！でもやっぱりおいしい！

食事の後はデレク宅に戻り、ケーキでお祝い♪ 土崎のお菓子屋さん『アンジェ』のケーキ。おじさんが名前を入れてくれた♪

おいしいものを食べて幸せな一日だった♪

The thirteenth of September is Derek’s birthday!
This is the second time that we have celebrated his birthday together, after last year. We went to Oga Aquarium called GAO for the first year, because that was what he wanted to do. This year all he said he wanted was eating curry at Laxmi. So we went there after work.

Same as usual it was hearty! But it was delicious!

After dinner, we went back to Derek’s and celebrated with some small cakes.
They were from a cake shop called Ange in Tsuchizaki. The pastry chef put his name on a chocolate plate. It read:

“Happy Birthday Rogers-kun”

Their cake was very delicious!
We were very happy about the food and getting to celebrate another birthday together!

港北『ラ・ニーニャ』　La Nina: Kohoku

今日はユキコちゃんと近場にオープンしたカフェ『ラ・ニーニャ』へ行ってみることにした。タウン情報で見つけて気になっていたところなので、ちょっとワクワク☆

店内は白、青、赤など地中海を思わせる配色になって、コースターやメニューなど手作り感であふれていた♪

おいしいランチでほっぺたを丸くしつつも、やっぱりメインはおしゃべり☆今までたまっていた話題がたくさんありすぎて、ランチタイムだけでは語りきれない！

なんとこの後、デザートのサービスが！
おかげで私の満足度は１２０％まで一気に上がった♪

近場にこんなお店があるなんて、うれしいね！
土日定休日と言うのが残念だけど…。

Yukiko and I went to a new place nearby called “La Nina” for lunch. This place was interesting since I found it in Town Joho, so I was excited!

The color combination inside was white, blue and red, and it reminded me of the Mediterranean Sea! And the stuff like coasters and menu book looked like handmade.

We enjoyed lunch, but the main thing we did was chatting! I couldn’t finish talking about all I want to say within the lunch time!

After the meal, we got free desert! Thanks to that, my satisfaction went up to 120%!

I’m happy that we have a nice place like this near our places! Though it’s a shame they are closed on Saturday and Sunday.

日本人投手に慣れてきた！？　Are you getting used to Japanese pitchers!?

今日もものすごくいい天気！！

いつもは御所野の球場でやってるけど、今日は仁井田の雄物川河川敷にある球場で対戦。私はデレクをおろしてから、近くに住むおばあちゃんちへ行った。

実はこの場所、デレクが以前ホームステイしていたお宅の近くでもあり、連絡を受けていたホストファミリーが球場まで駆けつけてくれたのだ♪　デレクも就職してから会っていなかったので、来てくれてうれしかった様子。

さて、私が戻るとチームは８－２の大差で負けていた。

しかしなんと！最終回で大逆転！勝った。

今日のデレクは、みんなが打てなかったピッチャーからも唯一ヒットを打ったらしい！
４試合目ともなると、日本人ピッチャーにも慣れてきたかな！？

日差しは強かったけど、いつものような蒸し暑さはなく、いよいよ秋の気配を感じるようになってきた。

It was very sunny today too!!

We usually play games at a field in Goshono, but today we had the game at a field near the Omono river bed. After dropping Derek off, I went to my grandma’s house who lives nearby.

Actually this place was also near to Derek’s host family’s house, and they came to see him! He hadn’t seen them since he got his job, so he looked really happy.

Well, after I came back I found that the score was 8-2 and his team was losing.

But, unbelievably, they took the lead and won the game in the final inning!

Today’s Derek: He was the one who hit the ball from the pitcher whom was really good. The other members weren’t able to hit his ball! This was the fourth game for Derek and it looks like he is getting used to the Japanese pitchers!

The sun was strong, but it wasn’t as humid as usual. It’s getting more like fall.

夏休みが明けてからというもの、文化祭の準備で毎日めまぐるしい日々を送っていたけど、それもようやく終了！終わったという安心感と同時に脱力感が…。
これは発散しなければ！と言うわけで、今日はデレクを誘い出して久々に外食することにした。

やって来たのは、デレクの職場の目と鼻の先にある『金谷洋食堂』。
私の中では、友達とごはんを食べる定番のお店になってるけど、デレクと来るのは今日が初めて。

こちとら発散しなきゃいけないから、食うでーー！！

んー、おいしい♪
やっぱ疲れを取るには、おいしいごはんとおしゃべりに限るね！
デレクよ、付き合ってくれてありがとう！

Since the summer vacation ended, I have been extremely busy at work preparing for the school festival. But It’s over now! I felt a sense of relief, as well as a sense of exhaustion!
I have to cast it off!
That’s why I decided to take Derek out for dinner today.

We chose a restaurant called Kanaya Yoshokudo, which is right next to Derek’s work place.

This is kind of a regular place for me to choose for dinner with friends after work, but this was the first time to come here with Derek.

It is a fancy restaurant. But…

I came here to eat! I have to cast off my exhaustion! Let’s eat!!

Mmmm, yum!!
When you want to relieve fatigue, the only way is to eat a good meal and chat!

デレクの野球の試合の日は、いつも暑い！！
今日も灼熱の太陽の元、均衡した試合展開を見せていた。

気付けば最終回、1点ビハインド。２アウト、ランナー１、２塁でバッターボックスにデレクが立っている。

…デレクが立っている！？

これまで２試合ノーヒットのデレクがっ！？もう祈るしかないっ！

打った球は三遊間を抜けた！
なんと記念すべき初ヒットは、同点タイムリー♪
その後チームメイトの活躍もあり、見事逆転サヨナラ勝利を収めました～パチパチ！

恒例の下浜では、たくさんのおいしい料理、そしてデレクはお立ち台にまで立った！

活躍できてよかったね☆

It’s too hot whenever Derek has a baseball game!!
Today, they had a close game under the scorching sun.

In the last inning with one point behind, runners on first and second and 2 outs, and Derek standing at a batter’s box.

…Derek at a batter’s box!?

He’d been empty bat for the past few games…All I could do was to pray!

His memorable first base hit turned out the timely hit pushing home the tying run! With his teammates’ nice plays afterwards, his team won a surprising come from behind victory! (clap clap!)

As usual, we went to Shimohama and had a beautiful BBQ. Derek got a hero’s interview!

大曲の花火100周年 Omagari Fireworks 100th Anniversary

デレクが一度は見てみたいと言うので、一緒に大曲の花火を見に行くことにした。
ちなみにこの大曲の花火は日本一の規模を誇る花火競技大会で、今年１００周年を迎える。

人混みを考えると最初は乗り気じゃなかったけど…

さ・す・が　大曲の花火！！一発の花火のでかいこと！
しかも打ち上げられるごとに、まるで胸を撃ち抜かれたか！？と思うくらい響いてくる。
視界いっぱいに広がる色とりどりの花火を見たら、もう他のは見れなくなっちゃうくらい☆
来てよかった～♪

Derek wanted to see the fireworks in Omagari so bad, so I decided to go with him. This is the biggest fireworks competition in Japan, and this year marked its 100th anniversary.

I felt reluctant to go there at first, thinking of the extreme crowds…

That was excellent! Each one was really big!
They came with strong jolts and I was feeling like I was shot!
Seeing these colorful fireworks fill your view, you can’t see any other fireworks show afterwards!
I was really happy to see them!

キャンプin田沢湖 Camping at Lake Tazawa

北海道から戻ったその週末はカズ＆ミキちゃんと田沢湖へキャンプに行ってきた☆

この日のBBQディナーは、ソーセージ、エビ、ミキちゃんの持ってきた塩ホルモン（激うま）と、デレク特製シシカバブ、などなど。デザートにはスイカが登場！

ディナーの後のお楽しみは2部構成！
まずは、自分の食べたスイカの皮をその辺に仕掛け、一番多くカブトムシが集まっている人が勝ちという、シンプルな勝負から=3=3 みんなカブトムシの出そうな所に仕掛けて、バンガローに戻った。
そして♪ バンガロー内では、デレクが持参したボードゲーム『ピクチャリカ』に熱中！これが意外とおもしろい！ミキちゃんが２戦連勝と、圧倒的な強さを見せた。

次の日の朝スイカの皮をそれぞれチェックしてみると…カブトムシが訪れた形跡はまるでなく、全員敗北…。しいて言えば、コオロギがやってきてたデレクが一歩リードと言えるだろう。

次の日はデレクと私は『シャワークライミング』へ行って、アウトドアを思う存分満喫！
夏休みの最後は、自然の中で野生的に過ごした。

ちなみにシャワークライミングのガイドさんによると、今年はカブトムシが大量発生しており、この日もわんさかいたとのこと…一体どこに！？

The weekend after Derek and I came back from Hokkaido, we went camping at Lake Tazawa with our friends Kazu and Miki.

The BBQ dinner was sausages, shrimp, Horumon-yaki that Miki brought, shish- kabobs that Derek made, and more. We ate watermelon for desert!

After dinner, we enjoyed two things.
The first was a simple game where we put the watermelon skins anywhere across the campsite, and the person whose skin has the most unicorn beetle wins. We laid down our beetle traps and went back to our cabin.
In the cabin, we played a game called Pictureka, that Derek brought, and we all got excited!! It was a lot of fun!! We played it twice, and Miki won both times!

The next morning, we went to check our skins…there were no signs that unicorn beetles had come and we all lost this game! When you come right down to it, Derek was still half a step ahead of us because his had two crickets!

On the next day, Derek and I went shower climbing. We enjoyed the outdoor activity.
We spent the last day of summer vacation wildly.

According to our shower climbing guide, many unicorn beetles have been seen here and there in this camp site this year…How could have we not found even one!

北海道旅行4日目～富良野～ Trip to Hokkaido: Rafting in Furano

後からデレクに聞いた話では、私が何やら寝言を言っていたらしい。しかも英語で！
内容は"What do you want to do next?”（次何したい？）と英語でデレクにたずねた後、日本語で選択肢を言っていたとか…なんてリアルな寝言！ちなみに結構流暢だったそう。（ヤッタ♪）

そんなことを言っても、この日にすることはもう決まっていた。

そう、ラフティング！！
せっかく北海道に来たのだから、大自然に揉まれてみることにした。

激流に突っ込む時のワクワク感がたまらんっ♪

途中、『はい、水に飛び込んでっ！』と言われ、飛び込んでみた。
水が冷たくてと～っても気持ちよかったよ☆
初めてのラフティングだったけど、意外と難しくなくて楽しみながら漕ぐことができた☆

デレクが行きたがってたカレー屋さんでランチ♪

その名も『唯我独尊』。
ツリーハウスのようなお店の前には行列がっ！
私たちは最近人気の自家製ソーセージ＆オムカレーを注文した。
すごいボリューム♪

早起き、ラフティング、ロングドライブ（富良野から苫小牧までは私が運転したよ！）…
おかげさまで、夜はフェリーの中でぐっすりだった。

According to Derek, I talked in my sleep!
In Enlgish!
He said that I asked him like, “What do you want to do next?” in English, then said some options in Japanese...How realistic! He also said that I spoke it quite fluently.

It’s too late to say such a thing. We already decided what to do that day.
Yes!! Rafting!! We wanted to enjoy the great outdoors because we were in the middle of the vast wilderness of Hokkaido.

How exciting when we went into the strong tides!

At one point in the river, our guide said, “Jump into the water!!”, and I did. The water was cold and it felt good!
It was my first time rafting, but it wasn’t that difficult and I really enjoyed it.

“What do you want to do next?”
We went to have curry and rice for lunch at a place where Derek wanted to go.
The place’s name was “Yuigadokuson” (means self-centeredness). It looked like a tree house and had a long line in front of the entrance.
We ordered homemade sausage & egg & curry.
Looks hearty!

Getting up early, rafting, a long driving (I drove all the way from Furano to Tomakomai this time.) …I did sleep well on the ferry.

ペンション『a Dish』～富良野～　a Dish, A Bed and Breakfast in Furano

3日目の宿はペンション『a Dish』。
ユキコちゃんが去年富良野に来た時に泊ったところで、とっても良かったという話を聞いていたのでここに決めた♪
到着すると、オーナー夫妻が温かく迎えてくれた。

くいしん坊の私にとって印象的だったのは、なんといっても朝・夕のごはん☆

ディナーの前菜がいきなりおいしかったので、何とも言えないすご～く幸せな気分になった♥ 次の料理が出てくるのが待ち遠しいほどまでに♪　朝食も、そのために目を覚ましたようなものだ☆
全部おいしかったけど、その中でも私のお気に入りは『野菜と豆のモロヘイヤスープ』と朝食の手作り天然酵母パン！どちらも富良野産の材料を使っていてとってもおいしい♥♥目がハートになった。

旅は忙しくて疲れるものだけど、人も部屋も景色もすごくステキで、リラックスして過ごすことができた☆

Derek and I stayed at a bed and breakfast called "a Dish”.
We decided on this place because my friend Yukiko stayed here when she came here with her husband, and said it was really nice.
When we arrived, the owner welcomed us.

For me, the most memorable thing there was the dinner & breakfast!

The appetizer was so delicious and it made me really happy! I was even looking forward to the next dish. I woke up excited for breakfast the next morning!
All of the dishes were good, but my favorites were the vegetable soup and handmade bread using wild yeast. Both were made from ingredients grown in Furano, and were soooo delicious!!

Travelling is usually busy and tiring, but we were able to relax with nice people, a clean room, and a fantastic view.

北海道旅行3日目～富良野～　Trip to Hokkaido: Furano

札幌から富良野はロングドライブだったから、運転はデレクに任せてまたもや車中で爆睡=3　
ふと目が覚めたら、第一目的地『三段滝』の前を通り過ぎる3秒前だった！滝大好き人間である私を感知したのはどの滝っ？

この滝だ～☆　ド迫力のこの流れ！

ほどなくして富良野に到着。。

見慣れない自然の風景は新鮮なものがあった。

大迫力の滝や広大な土地を見て、『北海道にいる』感を
１００％味わうことができた一日だった♪

Since it would be a long drive from Sapporo to Furano, I had Derek drive while I fell asleep in the passenger seat as usual.

When I woke up, we were about three seconds from passing a big waterfall called “Sandantaki” which was as our first destination for the day! Was it my love of waterfalls that led me to perceive that were close the waterfall?!

This waterfall!
Just look at the flow of the water. It has a trememdous impact!

We soon arrived in Furano.

It was really refreshing to see a nature scene that was unfamiliar to me.

After seeing a waterfall that had an amazing presence and one covered a large expanse of land, it became a day in which I felt 100% like I was in Hokkaido.

北海道旅行2日目～小樽～　Trip to Hokkaido: Otaru

2日目は、自分の目的をすでに果たしたデレクを連れて日帰り観光へ出かけた。

札幌駅から電車で向かった先は小樽☆
小樽と言えば、小樽運河、スイーツ、オルゴールにガラス細工…通りには思わず入りたくなるステキなお店がズラリと並んでいる♪

ところでここでの一番の目的は『小樽オルゴール堂』。といっても買うのではない。
実は十数年前、中学校の修学旅行で小樽を訪れた時に買ったオルゴールを直してもらうため、はるばる秋田から持ってきていたのだ！衝撃を与えないよう緊張しながら持って来たけど、預けてからはすっかり気が楽になり、晴れてショッピング三昧となった♥

お店で売ってるものもすごくかわいいけど、やっぱり町並みそのものに趣がある。明治～昭和初期に建てられた昔ながらの建物の中に今どきのお店が入っていて、うまく保存されているなぁと実感。すごくおしゃれな感じがした。秋田にこのような昔の建物があまり保存されていないのが残念！

On the second day in Hokkaido, I took Derek, who had already achieved his purpose here, for a day trip.

The destination that we headed was Otaru.
Otaru is renowned for its canal, sweets shops, music boxes, and glass work. There was a wide array of fancy shops that pulled us inside for a look!

The principal reason that I came here was to visit the Otaru Music Box Museum. But it was not because I wanted to buy something. I brought a music box to have it fixed. I bought it at the museum when I was a junior high student while visiting Otaru on a school trip a dozen years ago. I carried it carefully to the shop, but I still felt nervous. When I handed it to the person at a cashier, I felt at ease and that could fully enjoy the rest of the shopping there.

The things at the shops were very cure, but the face of the street itself was really fascinating. Most of the buildings there were built from the Meiji Period to the early Showa Period, but inside the buildings were modern shops. They were well preserved and looked very fancy. It’s a shame that we don’t have many old buildings like them in Akita!

☆北海道小樽市

北海道旅行1日目～札幌～　Trip to Hokkaido: Sapporo

今年の夏休みは、デレク悲願の北海道旅行＝3
なんでも北海道に行きたい一番の理由がサッポロビール園のビールを飲むことだったのだとか。
と言うわけで、早速サッポロビール園でビール＆ジンギスカンの飲み食べ放題を満喫♪（私は食べ放題のみだが♪）

秋田では味わえない北海道限定のビールもたくさん飲めて大満足の様子。

こうして、デレクの目的は北海道到着後3時間ほどで早々に果たされた…。

Derek and I went on a trip to Hokkaido this summer, where Derek had always wanted to visit. The principal reason for him to visit Hokkaido was drinking beer at the Sapporo Beer Garden.

We enjoyed barbecued lamb and many kinds of beer. (I enjoyed only lamb barbecue.)

Derek seemed to be happy to try many kinds of beer that we can’t try in Akita.

Thus, Derek’s purpose was achieved within three hours after we arrived in Hokkaido…

8月10日　The Tenth of August

その私の誕生日に、毎年欠かさず、日付が変わると同時にハッピーバースデーメールをくれる人がいる。仙台で家庭教師をしていた時の教え子、ユウカちゃん☆

一方、デレクは手料理をごちそうしてくれると言ったけど、急きょ予定を変更して、

他にもたくさんの友だちからメッセージやプレゼントをもらい、今年の誕生日も幸せな気持ちで過ごすことができて満足♪　ただ一つ、年をとったことだけは気に食わないがっ☆

Some people call this day “The day of heart” “The day of pigeons” “The day of hat” “The day of finally” and “The day of beasts”.
This day is my birthday.

On that day, there is a girl who sends me a birthday wish as soon as the date has changed every year without fail. It is Yuka, who used to be my tutee in Sendai.
She sent me the cute message to me this year too! Thank you!

While Derek was going to cook something for me, but we changed our mind and went to a restaurant called Osho. It was good!

I received lots of birthday wishes and presents from other friends, and I spent my birthday happily. I was NOT happy about only one thing, getting older…

メジャーリーグ流？ Major League-style?

今日（８月８日）はデレクの野球の試合の日だったので、球場まで送っていってそのまま御所野のイオンに買い物に行った。
無印では２人の大好物『パッタイ』が大量に入荷されており（♪）、３袋ゲット！

球場に戻ると試合は４回表。デレクが大きな失敗などしなかったかどうかチームメイトに尋ねたところ、

「失敗はしてないけど、一塁ベースにスライディングしたったな～（笑）」

一塁ベースにスライディング？？？
足から突っ込むやつ！？
ちょっと、聞いたことないよ～一塁にスライディングなんて！！

ま、それがメジャーリーグ流ってことで…

試合後は前回同様、下浜ビーチへ♪
今年２回目の海だけど、まだまだ焼き足りな～い！

Derek had a baseball game today (Aug 8th), so I drove him to the field, and I went to the AEON shopping mall in Goshono. I found a lot of packs of Pad Thai in stock at Muji, and bought three packs!

Getting back to the field, the game was in the top of the 4th. I asked if Derek didn’t make any mistakes to his teammate. The teammate said, “He hasn’t made any mistakes, but he slid into first base, haha.”

Sliding into first base???
The one running into from feet first!?
I haven’t heard about someone who slid into first base, haha.

That’s how it is in Major League, I guess.

We went to Shimohama Beach, like last time, after the game.
It was my second time to go to the beach, but I want to get tanned more!

自家製夏野菜カレー Homemade Summer Vegetable Curry

畑から旬の食材を収穫してきた。
私が自ら育てたシシトウ（ついにパプリカではなかった…）とジャガイモ、おじさんの作った玉ねぎとおばさんのナス！これらを使って、念願の「自家製夏野菜カレー」を作ってみた。
日本のカレーはあまり好きな方ではないけど、自分の畑で取れた野菜となると急においしく感じた♪ 特にジャガイモは信じられないほどのおいしさを発揮！！取れたての野菜を味わえるって最高♪

I harvested vegetables from my family farm.
Small sweet green peppers (They were actually not paprika…), potatoes that I grew, an onion my uncle grew, and my aunt’s egg plants! I made summer vegetable curry with them.
I’m not keen on Japanese curry, but this time it was good because I used homemade vegetables! The potatoes were particularly incredibly delicious!! It’s wonderful having vegetables fresh from the farm!

宮沢海岸　Miyazawa Beach

今日（８月６日）は午後から休みを取って、デレクと宮沢海岸で二人バーベキューをした。

今日の素材は、デレク宅にあったソーセージと、畑でとれたジャガイモ、ピーマン、玉ねぎ、そしてまどかちゃんにもらったトウモロコシなどなど。なんて安上がりっ☆

いくら北国とはいえ、今年は３０℃を超す蒸し暑い日が続いている秋田。野菜やソーセージを焼いている間に、私たちも日に焼けた！

宮澤海岸は水が透き通っててとってもキレイ♪ 食後の水浴びで、火照ったお肌もだいぶ冷されて、とっ～ても気持ちよかった☆比較的浅いので、過去に溺れかけた経験（ガーン…）をもつ私にとっては安心して泳げる海の一つである。

ただ一つ残念なのは、あのおいしい冷し中華で有名な海の家がなくなっていたということだ！海に入る前の冷し中華と、出た後のホットドッグがお決まりのパターンだったのに、かなりショック！夏の楽しみが一つ減ってしまった…。

Today (Aug 6th) I took a half day and went to Miyazawa Beach with Derek to BBQ!

Today’s ingredients are sausages from Derek, potatoes, green peppers, onions, which were from my family farm, corn that Madoka gave us, and so on. What a cheap deal!

Even though Akita is in the northern region, hot and humid weather continues for many days. While we were grilling sausages and vegetables, we got tanned!

The water in Miyazawa beach was very clear and beautiful. It felt good on the skin which was flushed from the heat. It is relatively shallow, so even I, who has nearly drowned before, felt safe.

Unfortunately, the beach house that served great hiyashi-chuka was gone… There was a set pattern that we eat hiyashi-chuka before going into the water and a hotdog after. Shock!!! I lost one of my favorite pattern in summer…

ババヘラ・スノー秋田雪 Babahera Snow

この日は最高気温３５℃という、ハンカチとうちわが手放せない猛暑となった。こんなに暑いとやっぱ冷たいものが食べたくなるね！
そんな私の目を引いたのは進藤冷菓の『ババヘラ・スノー秋田雪』。
竿燈の帰りに立ち寄って、マンゴー味を買ってみた。

食べてみると、かき氷とは全然違ーぅ！
フワッと柔らかく、まるでパウダースノーにシロップをかけて食べているような感覚♪
甘党の私はかなり気に入って、２回も食べた。

真夏の暑い日に体を冷やしてくれる秋田名物があるなんて幸せ♪

It was too hot and we definitely needed a handkerchief and a fan on this day! Don’t you want to eat something cold on hot day?

“Babahera Snow” of Shindo Frozen Sweets Inc. reallly appealed to me! We stopped by at the shop and bought the mango flavor.

It was totally different from the normal shaved ice. It was soft and just like I ate powder snow with syrup. I really liked it as I am a sweet person, so I ate it twice.

I’m really glad that we have a cold local food which is just right for hot days like this one!

去年の竿燈と言えば… Speaking of Last Year’s Kanto

５日も竿燈を見に行った。え？また行ったのかって？
秋田人なら４日間のうち、少なくとも２～３回は竿燈を見に行っているだろう（私だけか？）。今日はまどかちゃん、みきちゃん、デレクと４人で見物した。

この時期になると思いだすのは、去年、オーストラリアから竿燈を見に秋田に遊びに来た友人のジェフ、ジュリアス、アーノルドの３人のことだ。いつものメンバーを誘って一緒に竿燈を見物し、その後川反で秋田の郷土料理や酒でもてなした。この時の話になると「あの時は英語頑張った～！」と、みんな口をそろえて言うくらい英語を話しまくった=3=3 私も一生懸命英語でコミュニケーションを取っているみんなの姿に感動！ジェフたちも、秋田の祭り、秋田の味、そして秋田の人々のいい所を思う存分堪能できたと思う。

竿燈終了後、提灯のろうそくを一本もらった。今妊婦さんでもあるユキコちゃんへのプレゼントだ。このろうそく、安産の御利益があり、それも短ければ短いほどいいらしい。まどかちゃんの計らいで、一番短いのをゲットできた☆

そういえば去年ジェフたちが来た時も、記念にこのろうそくを持って帰ってもらったが、その後何か御利益はあっただろうか？

I went to see the kanto on the 5th. What? You said that I went there again? If you were an Akitan, you would definitely go to see the kanto two or three times out of the four days every year (or only me?). I saw the kanto with Madoka, Miki and Derek on this day.

We remembered the time that my three Australian friends, Jeff, Julius, and Arnold came to Akita to see the kanto festival at this time last year. My usual friends and I saw the kanto with them, and then we enjoyed some of Akita’s local food and sake at an izakaya in Kawabata.

When we talk about that time, everyone always says “I really did my best talking to them in English!” I was also impressed by them trying their best! Thanks so much! I’m sure that they enjoyed every bit of local festival, local food and local people in Akita!

After the performance, we went to get a candle. It was for Yukiko, who’s pregnant now. This candle has divine grace for giving birth, and shorter is better. Thanks to Madoka, we were able to get the shortest one!

Speaking of the candle, the Australian friends also got those candles as souvenirs. I wonder if they had something lucky afterwards.

秋田竿燈まつり　Akita Kanto Festival

秋田県人ならば誰もが（？）楽しみにしている「秋田竿燈まつり」が8月3日に始まった！デレクの上司のご厚意により、今年は桟敷席で楽しむことができた♪（ありがとうございました）。デレクは初の竿燈まつりを、私は初の桟敷席を満喫した♪

中央から見る竿燈はやっぱり迫力がある=3=3
なんたって、奥まで続く稲穂の灯りが両脇に見えるのだから♪ そして目の前の妙技にも釘づけになった。

突然、一本の竿燈がこちら側に倒れてきた！幸い電線の上に乗っかって助かったが、このことが数年前の竿燈での苦い出来事を思い出させた(><)。
それはユキコちゃんと竿燈を見に行った時に起こった(><)。あろうことか、一本の小若が私を目がけて倒れてきたのだ！あわてて逃げたものの、運動神経がなかったせいで…

『バヂン！！』『あギャーーーーーーーーーーーーーーッッッ！！！(><) 』

腰を打たれた…。痛かったよ～(><)

でも普通は竿燈が倒れても、人に当たることはめったにないからご安心あれ☆この日の竿燈もホントに綺麗だった♪

なにはともあれ、いよいよ秋田の夏が始まった！！

The Akita Kanto Festival, which every Akitan looks forward to every year, has started on the 3rd of August! Through the courtesy of Derek’s boss, we were able to see the kanto from the box seats (Thank you so much!). Derek enjoyed the kanto festival for the first time, and me at a box seat for the first time.

It had a tremendous impact on me seeing the kanto from the box seat in the center of the road. We could see the light of the rice ear shaped kanto line continuing to up the road on the both sides! And we were impressed by the excellent performances in front of us.

Suddenly, one kanto pole was falling down to this side! Luckily, it fell down on the wires. The wires saved us, but it reminded me of what happend to me at the festival a few years ago. It happened when I went to see the kanto with Yukiko.
You may not believe this, but one middle sized pole (kowaka) fell down towards me! I tried to get away, but unfortunately I didn’t have great reflexes and…

”Bam!!”
”Wachoooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!”

It hit my hip… it was really PAINFULL!!

It often happens that the kanto poles fall down, but they rarelly hit people so don’t worry! The kanto were really beautiful tonight too!

Anyway, this festival started summer in Akita!!

またね、モーリーン&マーク（泣）　See you, Maureen and Mark!

8月はいきなり悲しい出来事でスタートした。2日にモーリーン、3日にマークが、ALTの任期を終えて秋田を発ってしまったのだ（泣）

2日、駅に着いて驚いたのは、見送りの人の数のなんと多いこと！秋田駅の中央改札前やスターバックスにいるほぼすべての人がモーリーンの見送りじゃないかと思うくらい、たくさんの人がいた。そんな競争率の激しいモーリーンをなんとか捕まえて、手作り「さすが俺！」Tシャツを着てもらい記念写真撮影に成功！改札を通るとさみしい気持ちでいっぱいだった。

3日、午前10：56のこまちで東京に向かうマークを見送るために、私とカズは年次をもらい、デレクは仕事を途中で抜けてきた。こちらも見送りの人がたくさんいる中、マークにTシャツを着てもらい記念撮影。マークに、「他の三人もホントに来たがってたんだけどどうしても仕事が…」と説明しているうちに、だんだん涙が出てきて、しまいに号泣！そういうわけで、まどかちゃんからの、『時計の電池送って！』という伝言も伝えそびれてしまった…。

とにかく、2人とも手作りTシャツを着たまま改札をくぐってくれたので、作戦大成功！

ところでマークは、私たちが駐車場からわずかの隙間に見えるこまちに向かって手を振っていたのに気付いただろうか？

August started with unhappy events. Maureen and Mark left Akita on the 2nd and the 3rd at the expiration of their contracts as ALTs (Assistant Language Teacher)!

On the 2nd, I was so surprised because there were so many people to send off Maureen! It was enough people to make me think that all the people in front of the main gate at the station and at the Starbucks were for her! We managed to catch her, whose attention we had to compete for, and took pictures of all of us wearing the same handmade “That’s me!” T-shirts! I felt very sad when I saw her through the gate…

On the 3rd, Kazu and I took the day off, and Derek was allowed to take a short time off from work to send off Mark who left by the Komachi Shinkansen at 10:56. His send-off people were no less than Maureen’s, and took pictures together with the same T-shirts. When I explained that the other three couldn’t make it because of their work, it brought tears to my eyes. I ended up crying! That’s why I forgot to tell Mark a message from Madoka to send her batteries for the clock he gave her…

Anyway, we were happy that both of them went through the gate wearing that T-shirts!!

By the way, I wonder if Mark noticed us waving to the Komachi which could be seen between the narrowest gaps from the our parking spot..

手巻き寿司パーティー　Temaki-zushi Party

7月26日、モーリーン宅で手巻きずしパーティーを開いた♪
寿司ネタもたっぷり準備したはずだったが…あれよあれよという間になくなり、お品書きには『売り切れ御免』の札が次々と貼られていった。しかも『シャリ』が一番最初に売り切れ御免となったのにはびっくり！ありえない！！もちろん買い出しに走った。

手巻きずしの後は近くの通称「ロケット公園」で花火！この公園、蚊がおそろしいほどたくさんいて、みんな次々と襲われた。私はなんと、顔を刺されてしまった！ありえない！！もちろんムヒを塗りまくった。

モーリーン宅に来るのもこれが最後。モーリーンもマークも帰国するっていう実感が全くわかない。出発まであと一週間！？ありえない！！もちろん、見送りでは何か特別なことをするつもりだ。

On the 26th there was a temakizushi party at Maureen’s.
We were supposed to prepare a lot of sushi items but they went very quickly! The menu items on the curtain were tagged as “SOLD OUT”. And to our surprise, sushi rice was sold out first! This can’t be happening! Of course we went get more.

After temakizushi, we went to the park called “Rocket Park” and played with fireworks. In this park, there were lots of mosquitoes, and everyone was attacked one after another. Hard to believe but I got a mosquito bite on my face! This can’t be happening!! Of course I put plenty of insect bite reliever cream on it.

It would be the last time we would come over to Maureen’s place. It hasn’t hit me yet at all that Mark and Maureen are going back their home countries. Another one week!? This can’t be happening! Of course we’ll send them off doing something special.

ジャガイモ、ついに収穫♪ Potatoes were finally harvested!

ついに収穫しました～、ジャガイモ♪
デレク宅に放置されていたジャガイモが、こんなに実をつけるとはっ！でもちょっと早かったのか、やや小ぶりのものが多かった。
それにしても、土の中からジャガイモが出てきた時の喜びはクセになりそう！

Finally I harvested my potatoes! I’m glad that the unused potatoes at Derek’s place produced this much! Though most of them were small, and maybe that’s because I harvested them a bit earlier.

But I sure could get used to the delight when I found potatoes in the soil!

豆とメロン　Garden Beans and Cantalopes

先日、デレク母から送られてきた種のうちインゲン豆とメロンを植えてみた。メロンと聞いて、「今ごろ！？」と思われるかもしれないが、私は秋の収穫を目指している。しかもこないだ蒔いたのに、もうこんなに大きくなった！成長が早いのか、それともアメリカンサイズだからなのかは謎だが…。収穫するのが今から楽しみ♪

I tried planting some seeds of garden beans and cantaloupes that Derek’s mom sent the other day. You would be surprised “Cantaloupe!? At this time of year!?” to hear that, but I aim to harvest them in fall. I just planted them this month but now they already got this big!! I wonder if it’s because they are growing faster or that’s just American size...I’m looking forward to harvesting them!

土崎港曳山まつり 7月21日（水）　Tsuchizaki Minato Festival　Wednesday, July21st, 2010

デレクに地元の祭りを見せようと思って、今日は『土崎港曳山まつり』に久々にやって来た。この通称「港まつり」は毎年7月20，21日に行われる。小・中学校の頃は、毎年この日が来るのを心待ちにしていたものだ。

港まつりと言えば、この人形の乗った山車。実は私、この人形が、子どものころから大大大の苦手なのだ！妙にリアルすぎて怖い。山車が動くたびに、あの落ち武者的な長髪が揺れ動くのを見るのも鳥肌ものだ。それほど人形がよくできているというわけなのだが…私たちはそそくさとビアガーデンに引っ込んだ。

一つ、また一つと、山車が通り過ぎていく。茶髪の若者や白髪の年配者が一緒になって、一つの山車を先に進めていく。世代を超えて盛り上がれるのが、この祭りのいい所でもあり今後も受け継いでいかなければならない重要な文化だな～、と一人納得しながらサイダーを飲みほした。

翌朝、落ち武者たちが何体も束ねられてトラックで運ばれていくのを見た。
見たくなかった…。

I wanted to show Derek the local festival in Tsuchizaki, and that’s why I brought him to the Tsuchizaki Minato Festival for the first time in years. This festival is held on the 20th and 21st of July every year. When I was a kid, I really looked forward to this festival coming every year.

You can’t think of this festival without thinking about the floats with figures like these. Actually I HATE these figures from when I was a kid!! Above anything else, they look too real and scary! It also gave me goose bumps when I saw the lost samurai’s long hair swinging every time the float moves! We hide in the to beer garden.

The floats were passing one after another. Young t people with bleached hair and elderly people with gray hair worked together to make their float move forward. I think one of the good things about this festival is that that people of all ages can get mad at one thing together, and also it’s an important part of culture, we should carry on the torch.

On the next day, I saw a bunch of those figures bundled together being carried on a truck. I didn’t want to see…
